FAQ About Emotional Baggage
What is emotional baggage?Emotional baggage is a popular
term for the build-up of emotions from negative experiences. Emotional
baggage is usually caused by a build-up of emotional blocks.
What is an emotional block?An
emotional block occurs when a person consciously or subconsciously
decides not to deal with the emotions that arise from a negative
experience. Some methods of blocking unpleasant experiences are
through suppression, shutting down, ignoring the experience, forgetting
what happened, avoidance, and many others. These temporarily provide
relief but the emotional blocks can build up and cause emotional
baggage if the experience is not processed properly.
How does one get emotional baggage?Negative
experiences can cause a person to subconsciously or consciously respond
ineffectively to situations, conditions or other things that remind
them of the experience. This could lead to an increase in emotional
baggage and cause all kinds of problems. Emotional baggage causes
health issues, psychological issues, career stalls, relationships
problems, financial problems and others.
Is there a way to get rid of emotional baggage?Yes, there are several ways:
- A
person can just wait for time to pass in hopes that the emotion will
process itself. This may work sometimes but it requires a lot of
patience and may leave some unresolved issues.
- The person may
just forget what happened but unfortunately the experience may linger
in the subconscious mind and still negatively impact the person.
- Talking
it out with friends and family is a popular way to process baggage. An
attentive, caring, objective, interested and honest person is needed to
help someone effectively process emotions with this method. The
listener must not be judgmental or try to force their perspective on
the speaker.
- Therapy and counseling are another way to process
emotional baggage. These methods usually work best if the right
therapist is found and is affordable. Though it may take a shorter
time than just waiting for the emotional baggage to clear itself, some
negative experiences can take years to process completely with therapy
or counseling. Unfortunately in some societies there is a stigma
attached to seeing a mental health professional; this causes some
people not to use this effective method. There is nothing wrong with
utilizing professional mental health services and getting the care that
can help you to lead a better life.
- There are alternative
methods that utilize energy and bodywork, spiritual healing and other
methods. These methods are generally effective if the right technique
is used. There is a wide range to choose from and a person should find
the one that works for them.
How long does it take to process emotional baggage? It
depends on the method used and the negative experience being processed,
as well as other factors. Some negative experiences may be processed in
minutes while others may take longer. The main focus should be on
effectively processing the experience so that it can no longer have a
negative impact.
