Whether it is romantic, platonic, professional or family, a bad relationship can leave you burdened with emotional baggage.  Here are some examples:

A woman or man in an abusive relationship can know that the relationship is bad but is unable to leave because of strong feelings.  Low self-esteem is not necessarily the primary reason a person stays in a bad relationship.  Loyalty, hope, economic dependency are some other reasons.   Sometimes a person can leave these relationships on their own, other times it’s hard. They really want to leave but something keeps pulling them back and they can’t seem to fight it.  A person in this situation should find out what keeps them in the relationship and figure out how to leave, if they want to.

Good friends are precious. Supportive, trustworthy and loving friends should be cherished.  However, too many people are in bad friendships where it is normal to hurt or disappoint each other.   Some of these bad friendships are filled with extreme jealousy, competition and vindictive behavior.  All this negativity is dangerous to each participant’s emotional health.  Prolonged exposure can make most people grow cold, cynical and extremely negative.  This can leave them with an incredible amount of emotional confusion because although they may have fun with the bad friends the fun is based on negativity.  A person in this type of friendship should reassess the friendship and see if the long lasting effect of having bad friendships is worth the short-term fun.

Professional relationships can be beneficial to your career. While climbing the ladder, a person can meet some emotionally unhealthy co-workers who get a twist out of trying to sabotage other’s career.  Whether you were a target or escaped these people’s claws, you may have been emotionally effected by watching or being in their presence.  A person in a toxic work environment should consider whether keeping the job is worth absorbing the negative energy and subconsciously adopting the work culture.

Life gives a lot of choices but one can’t choose family members.  Some families are dysfunctional leaving members with emotional baggage that developed through their childhood.  A person that grows up in such an environment can continue or refuse to perpetuate the trend.  It is also hard to avoid troublesome family members especially during the holidays or if the person lives in the same home.  A person in this situation should be aware of the feelings a troublesome family member can incite and be prepared to handle interactions effectively.

Emotional baggage can develop and accumulate in all these situations.  The Baggage to Leverage© Technique can help you to understand the what and whys of your feelings.  Then you can effectively handle direct and similar situations that arise from these negative experiences.  Call today to process one emotional baggage for free.

What is emotional baggage?
Emotional baggage is a popular term for the build-up of emotions from negative experiences.  Emotional baggage is usually caused by a build-up of emotional blocks.

What is an emotional block?
An emotional block occurs when a person consciously or subconsciously decides not to deal with the emotions that arise from a negative experience.  Some methods of blocking unpleasant experiences are through suppression, shutting down, ignoring the experience, forgetting what happened, avoidance, and many others.  These temporarily provide relief but the emotional blocks can build up and cause emotional baggage if the experience is not processed properly.

How does one get emotional baggage?
Negative experiences can cause a person to subconsciously or consciously respond ineffectively to situations, conditions or other things that remind them of the experience.  This could lead to an increase in emotional baggage and cause all kinds of problems.  Emotional baggage causes health issues, psychological issues, career stalls, relationships problems, financial problems and others.

Is there a way to get rid of emotional baggage?

Yes, there are several ways:
  • A person can just wait for time to pass in hopes that the emotion will process itself.  This may work sometimes but it requires a lot of patience and may leave some unresolved issues.
  •  The person may just forget what happened but unfortunately the experience may linger in the subconscious mind and still negatively impact the person.
  • Talking it out with friends and family is a popular way to process baggage. An attentive, caring, objective, interested and honest person is needed to help someone effectively process emotions with this method. The listener must not be judgmental or try to force their perspective on the speaker.
  • Therapy and counseling are another way to process emotional baggage. These methods usually work best if the right therapist is found and is affordable.  Though it may take a shorter time than just waiting for the emotional baggage to clear itself, some negative experiences can take years to process completely with therapy or counseling. Unfortunately in some societies there is a stigma attached to seeing a mental health professional; this causes some people not to use this effective method.  There is nothing wrong with utilizing professional mental health services and getting the care that can help you to lead a better life.
  • There are alternative methods that utilize energy and bodywork, spiritual healing and other methods.  These methods are generally effective if the right technique is used. There is a wide range to choose from and a person should find the one that works for them.
How long does it take to process emotional baggage?
It depends on the method used and the negative experience being processed, as well as other factors. Some negative experiences may be processed in minutes while others may take longer. The main focus should be on effectively processing the experience so that it can no longer have a negative impact.
