I am a former professor of marketing who specialized in and researched service quality and customer satisfaction. I now live at the beach barely making ends meet, training for bicycle races, and "moonlighting" as both a marketing/marketing research consultant (internet or real world) and a computer security consultant.
The latter actually stems from the former. As a marketing researcher I know what information marketers and many bad guys typically desire (things that make them "easy" money), and how to get it without the targeted party either being aware of what they are divulging (e.g., cookies, spyware), or by being "tricked" into gladly giving it (e.g., your grocery store discount card, product registrations). And since I know the how to get it, it might logically follow that I would know how to keep it from being divulged -- both by companies and individuals. That's the security part.
I also began paying close attention to the net before it was opened to the public, but available only to government, researchers, and academicians. I found its explosion fascinating, and still do. I find the media/promotional component (a.k.a. advertising) very intriguing. For example, 30 second ads are so 20th century -- and expensive. However, a firm can now create an engaging 5-10 minute ad online for far less than they can buy cable or network airtime.
That said, many firms still do not "get the net." I am amazed at the number who still think they can simply port their traditional ad campaigns to the net and have them be successful. Unfortunately, many times they are not so easily just ported over. Let's face it, a 30-second TV ad is still a 30-second TV ad, even if online. So, I also guide firms through this newfangled maze and help them transition their marketing mix from the past to the internet and present day.
BTW, although this week has been a very off week for entries, I do go out and look for online promotional campaigns. I blog them, both good and bad, at my blog -- SippinWhisky's Distillery. You can find it at: http://sippinwhisky.wordpress.com . Have a peak at Rolex, Porche, Mountain Dew, GE's Ecomagination, or M&M's if you wish to see firms that fully use the net's capabilities. The blog is nothing at all special. It is more for my own education than anything else.
