Psychic Kathleen

Confessions of a Psychic - the life of a psychic practicing off and online in Canada for more than 30 years.
June is represented by the Lovers card in the Tarot and it’s Gemini month in astrology.

The Lovers card means we are facing a complex either/or choice.  On the one hand the outcome looks predictable, on the other, the outcome is unclear and risky.  In terms of romantic lovers, it would point to having to choose between thrill and steady or affair and commitment.

Gemini as the sign of the twins, is a focus on soul mates, connection and communication.  It’s also suggestive of the duality within the Gemini:  The twins existing in one person. June is a solstice month when exactly ½ the day is light and ½ is night which is why Gemini is so well represented in June.  Darkness and light in an equal and balanced duality.

Psychic Readings and Morality

One of a reader’s most complex challenges is her/his own prejudices/assumptions/moral code.  It’s a slippery slope!  Most importantly, a reader needs to know what their limitations are - what’s negotiable for them and what isn’t.

A client with a married lover is a case in point.

I don’t suffer strict moral limitations on this issue. In my view and experience, some, maybe even most, people are simply not monogamous. My experience, which may be skewed admittedly, would suggest most people can DO monogamy as a sacrifice to have the other goodies they like in a committed, long-term relationship but given their druthers, they would take new lovers whenever they wished.

It’s a promise made at a time, under a set of circumstances that may shift when a life change takes place, such as the birth of a child.  The commitment to remain together for monetary or child-rearing reasons, along with the transformed decision to open the relationship to new partners may happen at any time in a relationship’s journey.  For both sexes.  I’m not one that subscribes to the notion that women are, by some freak of nature, more monogamous than men.  The fact that this is typically more evident is simply social conditioning at play.

Online dating

This works for some but in my experience, a minority succeed in finding their true love online.  Foremost, you must go at it with the right mind-set.  It’s a mine field! Lying on profiles, having a steady girlfriend or being married and the partner living elsewhere, photos that are decades out of date, height, weight, job and hairline exaggerations.  Online dating is like running across a fast-moving river and trying not to sink.  You must take it all LIGHTLY - moving on from next to next lightning fast.  Don’t take any of it personally or seriously and be realistic in your approach – too good to be true? Do you think he’s/she’s gorgeous, smart, successful, kind, generous, funny and single?  Needing to meet their true love online because they can’t find anyone that will put up with them in person?  Seriously?

Love Takes Years

I’m often asked if their lover loves them.  True LOVE takes years to emerge, evolve and grow deep roots.  Love at first sight is LUST at first sight.  No one truly loves you until they’ve experienced you in all your disgusting glory – sick, vulnerable, making mistakes, stupid and otherwise. When we commit to being with one person for a lifetime, it’s their faults that will become our teachers and their gifts our enlightenment.

Making a commitment to this one person is the single biggest mistake you don’t want to make.  It will be a far greater investment than anything you might buy.  I’ve known people to spend more time humming and hawing over a car purchase than declaring a life time commitment to someone.  Your committed relationship will affect your health (for the good or bad), longevity (yes, married women die younger than single women and married men live longer than single men), financial stability (or not), career trajectory (self-confidence, workaholism), childbearing and rearing, and family relationships. It’s HUGE.

Now you know why it’s so easy to fall in love in June. Be intuitive and wise, circumspect and spontaneous – find that balance in the dark and light as you navigate this wondrous and treacherous journey ahead.

Hi Kathleen,

You did a tarot reading for me earlier this year. I’m just letting you know that you really nailed it!

And so in one week – I got a new car, saw Barbra Streisand and started a new job. If I’d won the lottery, I couldn’t have been any happier.

You totally rock!!!!!

Cheers Chris!"

When Taurus folk are in fine form, they are calm, practical, and hard working …and, unfairly I believe, often described as stubborn (“bullish”).  I tell my Taurus friends that when they are being accused of being stubborn, it is because their accuser is not in agreement. Taurus’ may appear to have a sudden change of heart. Then what can be even more surprising to their relations, is their unrelenting determination that is now uncharacteristically prepared to do battle.

Taurus’ do tend to get an idea lodged in their brains which they are reluctant to release.  Often quite easy going however, don’t let that fool you.  A Taurus is inclined to going with the flow while internally remaining uncommitted to the direction until the moment to commit hits. Looking at you with surprise, they’ll say, “Oh no. That’s not for ME.”   They can be reserved about their feelings but don’t let that knock you off kilter either.  They love deeply, value loyalty above all else and are dedicated to what they truly believe in.  To the death.

I always jokingly say that Taurus’s love pretty things and in fact they tend to be rather lovely themselves!

Characteristically sturdy and resilient with steady nerves. They demonstrate their love by gifting generously.   I think of Taurus’s as the salt of the earth sort of folks.  Steady and honourable goes the course. They don’t like to argue but they can be vulnerable to anxiety which may be linked to frustration so when they blow, head for the hills because that volcano that only erupts every 500 years is about to explode.  Get out of the way!

The Empress as Maiden, Mother, Crone

May is heralded by the Empress in the Tarot. She’s out in all her finery!  She represents the sacred triangle of Maiden, Mother and Crone.  She is the Goddess embodied in the earth.  She symbolizes the forces in nature related to receiving, fertility and chaos.  A volcano sits quietly for eons until suddenly, randomly, inexplicably, it erupts in a fire-spewing frenzy destroying everything in its path, like what is happening in Hawaii right now.

A little breeze in the Arabian desert picks up small particles of sand that will waft across the Atlantic until its force builds until it becomes a fierce hurricane wind whipping up millions of gallons of water and decimating everything in its path. This process starts in May and harvests on the east coast at the end of August and into September.

Generous, nurturing, loving, confident, and luscious; The Empress is Aphrodite the Maiden in her beauty and sex appeal; Hera the Mother, fiercely protective, proud and bodacious.  Finally, the apex of the Sacred Feminine Triangle, the ancient Crone as in the Goddess Hekate.  The Crone as wise grandmother who prepares a brew of hearty soup, all the while singing metaphoric songs of guidance.

The Empress as May in the northern hemisphere offers fragrant plants, flowers and newborns. Unpredictability in weather, wild winds as changing temperatures shift around the planet and of course those glorious, sunny fresh days to remind you why living on earth is just the best place to be in the universe.

Taurus Can Be Hard Ground

The ground in May, like the earth element of Taurus is solid and can be a tough nut to crack.  You wonder if your plants are going to root and grow.  You wonder why the ground is resistant to your watering.  You watch anxiously over your garden to see if it’s going to do anything! That’s why there are so many festivals cross culturally dedicated to coaxing and celebrating the spring planting. May is key to human survival.  It’s in our DNA to be excited and yet nervous about May.

We might not all be in planting mode, but likely we’re planning/planting for the best summer ever!  Do you imagine the bounty of the BBQ?  Having fun in the sun with family and friends?  Family reunions? Weddings, picnics, births, outside activities?  All of this hearkens back to the time when we were planting the seeds that we would revel in watching grow all summer long and hope to harvest aplenty in late August, September and October.

I wish you a wondrous May!  Be mindful of the seeds you plant this month – they will continue to grow all summer long bringing that much awaited harvest four months from now.

Blessings Kathleen

Quote
"The ancient lunar calendar, which measured time by the thirteen moons in a solar cycle (rather than the twelve solar months in our year) was associated with Goddess-centred religions that honoured the moon and, by extension,  with women and women's culture and creativity. The unlucky connotation of the number thirteen arose through suspicious fear of the changeable moon and of the creativity of women in later patriarchal times. The moon after all, was associated with mortality and with the fear that arose from facing death."

“….you have no idea how accurate you were on some things….”

Kathleen, thank you so much for this afternoon!

My mom has been to many psychics in her life but she said that you were the first one that she truly felt comfortable with. You have no idea how accurate you were on some things with both of us! She has already been raving about you to all of her friends so I wouldn’t be surprised if a few call you.

Thanks again and hope to be in touch in the future

I hope you had a lovely, Spring-like Easter weekend.  I did! The best.  My highlight was attending a social sewing gathering at my local fabric shop in downtown Victoria on Sunday morning which always brings me that special boost of maker’s joy. An event I look forward to every month.  We sit in a small circle in the centre of the shop and rather abashedly share our makes over the past month.  We talk about what’s new in patterns, fabric and online that the rest of the group might enjoy.  It’s my “circle of women” who know me only as a rather geeky but eager-to-learn, advanced beginner sewist (yes, this really is a designation).

I think it’s good for our character to position ourselves in places and situations where we’re the new, green kid.  As we age, we can be guilty of gravitating to what we know, falling into habits and routines that are familiar and comfortable. For an aging brain that tends to repeat, obsess and forget, experimenting and learning new skills with new folks, challenges us to be vulnerable and adapt.  Sewing has done wonders for my aging brain (I wrote a blog post about it which you can read HERE)

Aries is the God of War

The first three weeks of April is the time of Aries.  In the Tarot, this is the season of the Emperor.  The boss, the father and alpha patriarch, he rules by divine will.  He represents virility, leadership, masculine force, fertility and fire.  The King of Kings. The archetypal Yang.  Never a dull moment.

“God!  It’s hard to be humble”, yells the Emperor.  As Aries, He is the God of War.  A word of advice, don’t fight with an Aries. He likes it too much and you will inevitably not like it much at all.

A client (Leo) recently came for a reading in deep distress. She was failing miserably to cope with her ex-husband whom she had divorced years earlier.  He had declared war on her, assigning all the big guns of the court system to crush her.  Having his way, there would be nothing left of her once all his armaments had been fired.  He had already brought her to her knees financially and had her jailed on trumped up, unproven charges. Don’t go to war with an Aries man particularly if you suspect that he’s suffering (or more accurately others around him are!) from a narcissistic personality disorder.

The Horned God in Celtic Tradition

In Celtic faith, he is the Horned God chasing the maiden Goddess through the fields in early Spring. He will capture and impregnate her, symbolizing the stirring of the ground to give forth the bounty that will feed the tribe through the winter.  He is strength, seed and direction.  A good Emperor must see beyond his own needs and desires to sustain the burden of responsibility for the tribe.  He is stoicism, wisdom and judgement.  He is the Spring and the Return of the Sun (Son) which is why his element is fire.

In feminist ideology the Emperor is another card which carries complications.  Why must leaders be men?  Why is he the connected to the life-giving force, warmth and light of the Sun? Feminist decks have supplanted him with the Crone, the Witch and Medicine Woman.  His relationship to patriarchy, misogyny, and harsh judgement has been the bane of women’s existence for thousands of years.

Women have suffered untold centuries of prejudice, torture and murder at his hands as his grab for power has often been at their expense.  Don’t get me started. It will take me hours to climb off this soapbox.

The Nordic Goddess Ester

In April, the ancient Celtic and Nordic practice stays with us in the celebration of Easter which is sourced from the Goddess Ester. This Nordic Goddess represented fertility (Easter Eggs) and the fecundity of the earth to provide sustenance.
Celebrate April!  Buy some fresh flowers for your home and garden, take extra deep breaths of that lovely fresh, spring air and the earth stirring to life.  Be present and re-energize.

"Everything that Kathleen told me in my tarot reading has come to pass. She is very accurate. In one of my readings Kathleen said: ‘don’t sign any legal documents tomorrow’. Thanks to Kathleen I was able to avoid making a big mistake. She is one of the “real gifted” psychics! As well as being very well read and up to date in her field. In fact, she’s probably adding to that body of knowledge as we speak.”

Spring! Crocuses are poking up, cherry blossoms are blooming, the earth smells rich with promise and best of all, the SUN is returning to us here in the north!  We see it earlier in the morning and she sticks around a little later into the evening. Spring makes you feel like moving your body. You have a Spring in your step.  Springing into action.   Springing to life.  The older I get, the more I notice this phenomenon.

In the Tarot, Spring is the season of the Fool.  The Fool is 0, all potential. The Fool, the symbol of beginnings, represents our first step into embodiment.  Each new venture we embark upon in our lives puts us back in the Fool’s space.  Take a risk.  Do something you’ve never tried before.  Go forth, explore, learn, grow, take risks, fall off a cliff.

The Fool is typically depicted as a character walking with their head lifted, eyes focused on the horizon and skyward.  Little attention being paid to the ground.  No notice of the little dog that jumps on her hind leg, warning her of the potential dangers ahead.  Onward and upward.  A spring in her step, a look of happy anticipation on her face.  You know, that la de da look.  Open with trust and faith that this is going to be a wondrous adventure.

Fulfilling Your Life’s Purpose

When the Fool card shows up in a reading, it signals that you need to have the confidence to take a risk to pursue your heart’s desire.  You are being pulled to fulfill your soul’s purpose.  You are discovering who YOU are, what YOU want and what YOU can do. It means you must and will have the energy to make choices, stand your ground and believe in yourself.

When the Fool is issued as a warning, it describes a situation where all this wonderful “spring” energy is stuck.  The Fool impetus is not being given license to express itself fully.  You are at risk of making a “foolish” choice.  Taking no action would be just as detrimental.

In a Negative Placement The Fool Indicates Pathological Dependencies

Making wrong choices, refusing to commit to any course of action, paranoid and pessimistic, lacking self-confidence, following a path of least resistance instead of seizing control of your life and destiny threaten to derail the recipient of this Fool’s warning.  Further, this blocked Fool may be refusing to grow up and accept responsibility. A Fool in this negative place is being wishy-washy, half-hearted, dependent and self-defeating. It means you are settling for this stuck place and refusing to listen to sage advice.  You are being cowardly which is derailing you from your path of true destiny.

When we block this energy to venture forth with trust and a sense of adventure. we are wasting our lush human potential through lack of initiative and courage.

On a positive note it might just be the message the Fool needs to hear right now to be spurred into acting!  We may know well that we’re stuck but we’re still afraid to take that leap of faith. Hearing this in a reading is often the nudge we need at just the right time.

Spring sets off a flurry of exciting plans for travel, visiting, adventure, activities and relationships.  It’s a time to fall in love.  Be in Paris.

Spring Equinox will arrive at 9:15 AM on Tuesday March 20th for us on the west coast.  This is when the sun is at the equator (Equinox) right in the middle between the northern and southern hemispheres.  There was a time when humanity celebrated this time with festivals and community events.  The Equinox marked the time of planting, a return of warmth, light and an ease of living.

Regrettably, much of this has been culturally lost, though vestiges of its significance is carried in most of the world’s major religions.  This article outlines 10 of them around the world.

I wish you a Joyful Spring!  Rich with promise.

I was going to launch into Happy Valentine’s Day and then changed my mind.  I had a complete first draft written, using the tarot Lover’s card to plant the theme – until I woke up the following morning with the revelation that this wasn’t what I wanted to write about after all.  Romance, Valentine’s Day, hearts, flowers, chocolate doesn’t speak to me about love. Not that there is anything intrinsically wrong with any of these things, but they don’t symbolize true love to me.

The Hierophant in the tarot does however, speak volumes to me about love.  The Hierophant card symbolizes our spiritual father or holy man.  It represents an individual who translates the word of the divine. Conversely, the High Priestess symbolizes our spiritual mother but that’s for another month.

The Hierophant Re-Versioned

The Hierophant teaches (or more accurately, admonishes) morality, personal sacrifice, commitment, selflessness and self-discipline.  He’s uncompromising. His element is earth, and like a Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, he’s about arduous work, and steadfastness. Do what you say and say what you do sort of guy. In modern, innovative, feminist decks, the Hierophant is re-versioned as the Crone or Teacher, but the meaning alters only slightly.

From a feminist perspective, the Hierophant in classic Tarot is rigid, patriarchal, judgemental and hierarchal.  He makes us uncomfortable.  In terms of LOVE however, the Hierophant is worthy of notice.

This month, I’m celebrating our 28th Wedding Anniversary.  We married on February 16th because I just couldn’t bare the idea of marrying on the 14th. That was just TOO….well you know. Just TOO extra as one of my clients likes to say when describing something that’s just TOO much.

We met in July 1989 and married in February 1990.  Yep, short and sweet.  I can’t say I knew from the moment I met him I wanted to marry him. I didn’t like him.  He was bossy and I don’t like to be bossed around. After seeing him a couple of times, however, (I had no choice, he was coming into my place of work), he started growing on me.  I noticed I was watching the door every time it opened to see if it was him.  Finally, I suggested to him that since I had the following day off (and I was feeling a little wistful about that), why not meet in a spot away from my work environment so I wouldn’t have to put up with constant distractions and could focus more on him. He was amicable to the suggestion and so began a series of meet-ups away from my workplace.

When I suggested we move in together because that would afford me even more opportunity to focus on him, he laughed and said, “Not in your life.  The only way I’m going to live with you is if we’re married.”  I was a quick study at 34 so I enthusiastically replied, “Let’s get married then.”  He grinned and said, “Sure, since you’re askin’.”

Then it hit me.   WHAT WAS I THINKING??? Had I gone completely bonkers?  But once the cat is out of the bag, it’s tough to try and get that wiggly thing back in.  I had never intended to remarry. My first marriage was a disaster which had convinced me this was not an institution I liked.  I’m not keen on institutions in general but this one, for sure, NO.

I regarded him speculatively as he continued grinning at me with one eyebrow raised.  “So. When are we going to do this?”

I answered, “How about in two weeks?” Had I really said that? Now I was having heart palpitations.

And so we did.  Got married in two weeks from that fateful night. Two weeks that flew by in a blur of preparation.

“We were married.  You know, nothing is ever black and white, there’s a lot of gray in there.”

It’s said that when we fall out of love, that’s when real love begins.  Typically devastated, we truly SEE that other person outside our own projections, expectations and imaginings. They are a whole person, apart and separate from us. They are OTHER.

Marriage is a complex relationship.  Like one of my wise, widowed clients said the other day, “We were married.  You know nothing is ever black and white, there’s a lot of gray in there.”  I was struck with the simplicity and TRUTH of this statement.
In the beginning, we’re black and white.  We’re opposites (and he was about as opposite to me as one could get), and there have been times in our commitment when I’ve looked across the abyss that gapes between us and wondered how we’re ever going to cross that ego-bound divide.  How will we find our way back to each other?  With rigorous intention, determination, co-operation, compromise, commitment, sacrifice and kindness, we have and do.

Love Must be Equal on Both Sides

The love is too strong a bond to simply give up on. But it must be equal on both sides. That’s the wonder of this type of couple love. Both of you, continuously, strenuously working hard from your respective, individual selves, to narrow the chasm, to come back together in a union of opposites that brings out the best in yourselves.  “I love and care for myself the most when I’m with you”, is the theme song.  That’s the melody of love waving back and forth between you like bodies of water that nourish and energize you both for a lifetime.

It’s the meaning of the Hierophant to me in this anniversary month.  It’s when I celebrate this deep, abiding and lasting love to which I am profoundly grateful.  It’s not hearts, flowers, Champaign and chocolate.  It’s a montage of memories like a patchwork quilt that’s nourished my soul for twenty-eight years.  It’s commitment, doing the right thing even if it’s not the easy thing, it’s being present with the OTHER through the good, the scary, messy and the joy.

I see you and I love you.  That’s what February means to me. I wish you a loving, Hierophant February and if not now, then in the not so distant future.

Blessings Kathleen

Every time I say or write 2018, I get a jolt.  It sounds like a date that should be far into the future.  We’re almost a fifth of the way into the 21st Century.  I was born half way through the last one and well…that’s just weird.

The Tarot card that exemplifies this time of year is the Judgement card.  Whenever I turn over this card, clients worry it means they will be judged harshly.

On Judgement Day (according to scripture), the world is at an end and those still alive shall be irrevocably judged by the divine.  Let’s be honest.  Most of us would fail to pass the mustard subjected to an all-seeing scrutiny which is why Judgement Day has rarely been construed to be one to anticipate with bated breath.

The good, stay and the bad, go.  Those already in spirit will live again if they deserve to, although what a blessing this would be, is debatable. No wonder the Judgement card is rather worrisome to most people.

or any religious dogma for that matter. They possess a unique symbolism which has evolved through many associations throughout the centuries, most of which has been debated vigorously, ad-nauseam.

Unlike Judgement Day, the Judgement card in the Tarot is a welcome sight.  It symbolizes forgiveness, refresh and rebirth.  It’s about letting go of all those pesky old resentments, vengeful fantasies (as delightful as these can be which is what makes them so addictive) and frustration.  It’s about live and let live.  Joy to the World and all that good stuff.  This is a, “everything is all good so we can move forward”, card.

At the arrival of the dawn, all rise and lift their arms to the sky, confident that goodness will prevail, and justice will be fair.  It’s about realizing with tremendous relief that all that toxic, stinky, old anger is healed and no longer a burden that we must drag around like a dead pet.  We’re free and filled with light.  We’re fresh with promise and ready to embrace a new day.

That’s what the bringing in of the New Year should be.

Our end of December reflections is summarized and filed.  We’ve heartily congratulated ourselves for all we accomplished in the year just passed and noted those failures we’d rather not repeat EVER again. Resolutions are identified and pledged. Projects left incomplete top our list to be finished at the start of the year.  We’re fresh, resolved and re-energized.

We’ve embraced relatives and friends with magnanimous good will throughout the holiday season just passed and laughed heartily (perhaps with the help of a little inebriation) at passed misunderstandings and miscommunications.  We are feeling all is right with us and our loved ones.  Now it’s time to bring in a new year.

It’s a Wondrous and Luminous Time

I wish you a memorable 2018 whatever that means to you.  I wish you a year beyond even your imagination.

I wish you the resolve to adhere to your resolutions (don’t forget to include a few spiritual ones in there as well as physical ones) but even more importantly that you are able to forgive yourself heartily when you fail to.  Keep in mind that about 80% of us have given up on these resolutions by mid-February.

Resolve is about motivation. What are you motivated by?  Fear, achievement, social currency, power, growth or reward are the primary keys to what motivates us but really what motivates YOU is as individualistic as your fingerprint.  If you can identify what motivates you, you can use this to propel you to the next level you wish to achieve over the coming year. Whatever that might be!

I hope the problems that were plaguing you throughout 2017 are remedied not so far into 2018.

As collectively we turned over the Judgement card yesterday, let us commit to forgiveness, gratitude and rebirth for a fresh start today.

“What the heck does Hierophant mean?”, clients always ask. It’s an ancient Greek term which refers to someone who interprets religious mysteries. A term from antiquity which roughly translates to “priest” in English.

In classic Tarot meaning, The Hierophant card represents morality.  Doing the right thing.  Making commitments and adhering to them no matter how inconvenient or painful that may be.  Words like pledge, promise, commitment and rigorous learning come to mind with this card.  Some will include other words like teacher, tradition, classicism, and judgement.

From a Feminist Perspective, The Hierophant

is shrouded in a more sinister mantle. His misogynistic, traditional religious overtones dominate. The Hierophant staunchly refuses to acknowledge that women have equally strong, spiritual leadership qualities as men.  He burned 9 million women in the middle ages for being witches. He strictly adheres to the laws laid down in ancient religious writings which are rife with anti-feminine sentiment. He sternly expects others to do the same.  If you’ve ever read anything by St. Augustine about the “weaker sex”, you’ll get this drift.

The Hierophant is a supporter of the ancient practices of inherited, imperial hierarchy.  He represents that part of ourselves that tends to swallow whole the dictates of tradition, as if because they have always been done, they must be right and good.

The Hierophant is number 5, following the Emperor number 4. The Emperor rules absolutely, imperially and the Hierophant always has his back.  He will lead the flock, with the heavy-weight of God’s will behind him, to follow the dictates of the Emperor without question or protest. The Emperor looks to him for support, guidance and backing and in turn provides the Hierophant with a cushy and safe abode from which to conduct his work.

These two cards together suggest the client is bumping up against patriarchy at its worst.  Questions like,

“How are you being bullied into going along with the status quo?”
“How are you following rules by rote rather than choice?”
“Why are you feeling guilty for being a bit of a rebel?”
“How might this contact or commitment mean that in the future, you will have to muscle through it regardless of how much of a sacrifice this may demand of you?”

Getting Married, for example

is performing a ritual which is expected, via tradition – it’s doing the right thing by society, family and your future offspring.

You may be adhering to a tradition because it’s expected of you to do so.

Learning and/or Teaching Moral Guidance

You are in a hierarchal place. Now is the time to question whether you are doing what you truly believe is right or going along with a tradition that someone else has laid out.

This is why I picked the Hierophant to be the perfect representative for this time of year.  How many people partake in Christmas festivities because they feel they should? How many events will you attend because you are expected to?  How much will you spend on silly items no one wants really to fit in and not make waves in the traditions which so dominate this time of year?

Going Along with Xmas Traditions

Too many feel pressured to attend, perform, spend and join in festivities they would rather not.  People outside the Christian tradition are often expected to go along with these traditions and due to the daunting influence of the media, marketing and habit, it is difficult indeed to stand against the grain.

Those outside Christianity (and there are billions of them) aren’t the only ones who feel this pressure. Even those who have been raised Christian and would rather not join in the festivities (those in addiction recovery, poor, LGBTQ just to name a few) feel embarrassed and shy to say no to invites which put them socially in awkward, self-conscious positions.

I wish you the very best of the holiday season.  Go where your heart leads you.  Offer only what you can afford. Invite those who share your enthusiasm. Giving, fellowship with other humans, kindness should be qualities we extend and celebrate all year, not just when the Hierophant deems it a must-do.

In the event you are struggling to figure out what to gift a loved one at this time of year including yourself (and want to give them something no one else likely will!), I do provide hard copy, personalized Gift Certificates.

"I have had readings from Kathleen for about 15 years now and it has always been an incredible experience each time. Kathleen takes her craft very seriously and has studied it intensely. She is professional and so knowledgeable - not only about the Tarot (an instrument with which she is so talented) but also about the history, and other related subjects. She is kind and compassionate, never judges, and is genuinely interested in her client's well-being. I would highly recommend Kathleen's readings, as I find her to be very authentic. She is very easy to talk to and, even months after the reading, things emerge that Kathleen has already had insight into. Kathleen is the real deal and she puts her heart and soul into what she does whether it is in person, or over the phone. You won't be disappointed."
Sincerely,
Deborah Williamson

More Testimonials
Every once in the while I like to tell a story about a client (in this case two clients) and their reading.

L. has been my client for several years.  Mid-forties, married with two young children, L. is a high functioning, articulate, bi-lingual Canadian, Gemini.
Three years ago, L. decided to move.  He changed countries in Europe a couple of times, moved back to Canada (Toronto) and now lives in Quebec.  Another move is immanent. His woes have left him suffering PTSD.

For too many reasons to list, his life has been frustrating, frightening and ill-fated.  We’ve all been there.  A never-ending, uphill battle. Rather like Sisyphus and the boulder.

On October 30th (the AM of Devil’s night), he asked me to tell him some good news.  “Something good is coming finally, PLEASE”, he lamented.
I turned over the Devil card (expletive).

Just as I was about to sing him the comforting song

about how the Devil card doesn’t signal disaster, we were disconnected.  This happened not once but twice.  Cut off in mid-sentence. No explanation about why this happened or that it had even happened. Our calls just ended at that moment when I was opening my mouth to sooth and assure.  I sighed.  L. is not out of the dark yet and clearly (I felt) I was not going to be permitted to soften the blow.

Immediately on the heels of this reading with L., I met with a man in his ‘70’s. He had enjoyed a good life until, inexplicably, after 30 years of working for a company he genuinely liked and respected, he was fired.  A man of fortitude and positivity and resistant to notions of retirement, he sailed off and found another job. A great job. One he loved every bit as much.

A few months into his new job, the old company, the ones who had unceremoniously dumped him, launched a law suit against him, his new company and his son (who was also working for the same new company).

Relentless, like going after a “mosquito with a baseball bat” as he described it, they were gunning for him.  After spending $100,000 on a legal defence, he was no where near the end of the nightmare. Very likely he would be utterly ruined financially by the end of this arduous road. His wife had seemingly overnight (undoubtedly due to the stress) started exhibiting signs of dementia and a serious heart condition.

I sighed as I turned over the Devil card

A different deck, for a different client.  Just as I was about to sing my comforting song again, a VERY loud buzz saw started up right outside my office window.  I looked at him helplessly realizing I would have to scream to be heard above the din. Sitting together a full 5 minutes until the racket stopped, he had plenty of time to contemplate that Devil card before him.  He looked at me with very sad eyes and said, “I guess things aren’t going to go great for me, are they?”

In both cases I was muzzled at just that moment when a positive reframing was so desperately needed.  I pondered these two readings in a row and their similarities.  They were both destined not to hear how the Devil card wasn’t that bad.

I first met the Devil card the night before Halloween 1974 (yes another Devil’s night!) when a few of us (women) gathered around a candle-lit table to play with my new Tarot deck.  I turned over the Death card, the Tower and finally the Devil card. Yelping and scrambling for the lights in a blind panic, we decided to discuss this matter under the safe reassurance of bright lights.

What kind of day had we all had?  Who had we met in the last week that’s creepy?  It led to a lively discussion, taking us down an exploratory path we would never have wandered without the trigger of the Devil.

The Devil’s card and night corresponds with the fall harvest

Eat, drink and be merry because soon winter will be upon us.  We’ll be happy to savour those luscious memories as we bite into a bit of dried meat we’d smoked and saved.  The Devil is about being in the moment, indulgence, material/physical pleasure and laughing until you’re gasping for breath.  That’s when things are going well.

On the shadow side, the Devil is about entrapment, addiction, over indulgence
and being stuck in a negative loop that you don’t know how to get out of or break.  It’s about loving that meal, sexual encounter, easy money so much you’d sacrifice everything that has heart and meaning in your life to taste it again…and again…and again.  The Devil teaches us to be circumspect even when abundance is in great supply, to be disciplined in our indulgences, to savour yet save and not to be fooled into believing that anything comes easy.  Everything exacts a price.

We might imagine that we live in a time when addiction proliferates more than at any other time in our her/history but I’m doubtful.

I think humans have always struggled with addictions and entrapment.  We’ve always been vulnerable to loving our pleasures a little too much which is why all the spiritual teachings throughout the ages include a narrative about them.  And, why a spiritual perspective has always been its best cure.  Perhaps its only one.

The spiritual vision elevates our perspective.  It’s grander.  It’s the long view.  It helps us to see behind to the epochs of our ancestors and the ones of our descendants to come. It shifts our focus off ourselves if only for a short while.  This can be surprisingly freeing.  Life can be so damn painful, it’s pleasant to focus on something and someone else for a change.  Especially when all we can see of ourselves at this moment is our misery.

Carl Jung spoke of addiction as a spiritual problem and in this I believe he was right.  If you notice you are addicted to something (and I’ve yet to meet one single person who isn’t!), ponder what it is you’re REALLY wish you were reaching for when you reach for the object of your desire.  The question the Devil asks, “What are you prepared to sacrifice to have more of this than you need?” Because sacrifice you will.  Whether you’re aware of it now or not.

The Devil card points to entrapment

A trap we have set for ourselves with our material desires. An addiction that we hate but are powerless to resist.  A job that pays us well, but one we despise. An unhealthy relationship that we sustain because the financial cost of breaking up is too high.  An escalating debt that forces us to work every minute we’re awake.

It dawned on me that the Devil card was challenging me most of all.  How hard it is to ask someone how their attachment to the material plane is the root of their problems?  How had their over-attachment to the corporeal blinded them to the risks they were taking that would end up costing them everything?

The Devil demands we ask these tough questions of ourselves and others sometimes too.  The “Light Bringer” wasn’t given this moniker for nothing.

Everyone has nightmares.  Being chased and terrorized, falling into a bottomless abyss, seeing a reflection of ourselves and discovering that our appearance has altered alarmingly. We may be a witness to a horrible event like someone we love disappearing or transforming into someone else or something unrecognizable.  We may be in the doctor’s office absorbing some traumatic diagnosis and prognosis.

Sometimes the nightmare is more about our reaction to the events in the dream. When we tell someone about it, they laugh, failing to grasp it gravity and impact upon us, furthering the traumatic impact with confusion.  A rather depressing exemplification of, “You really needed to be there.”

Upon awakening, soaked in sweat, sometimes screaming out loud, heart beating fast - so relieved to discover it was a nightmare and not waking life!

The meaning of the nightmare is as individual as we are, however there are several common reasons for having nightmares.  One is trauma.  We may not allow ourselves to reflect upon a traumatic event because the effects are still too raw.  Our consciousness however must integrate and file these experiences into our psychic makeup.  Our psyche is compelled to give them context and meaning in an aim to reach a place of peace and acceptance.

A Fear Has Breached Our Normal Defences

There are many reasons for nightmares; fear of failure, poor health or a necessary health alert, or feeling victimized.  Being bullied generates nightmares in a victim of any age. Being faced with a difficult choice, behaving in a manner unfamiliar to our self-concept, abandonment, loneliness, lack of safety can all trigger the advent of a nightmare.

They do mean that we need to pay more attention to something taking place in our everyday lives.  We are either guilty of ignoring the threat or of minimizing its impact.  During WWI for example, military psychiatrists noted that when men on the front lines began dreaming of the horrors of war they needed to be removed from the battle.  Somehow the horror had breached a psychic barrier which often presaged the onslaught of a crippling mental illness.

Nightmares let us know that a fear of something has breached our normal defences.  We ignore it at our peril.

Consider nightmares to be like a psychic scream.  Our unconscious mind has been transmitting warnings on many fronts which we’ve been determinedly ignoring. In consequence, our unconscious is triggered to amplify the volume.  Our psyche has been left little choice but to rattle us to attention!

Nightmares May Signal Encroaching Mental Illness

Keeping in mind however, that dreams amplify our waking life experiences by tenfold, a nightmare may be highlighting a growing neurosis – fear of something not founded but rather a phobia or neurotic worry.  People who describe themselves as worry warts tend to be plagued more frequently with nightmares. Regardless, a nightmare in this case still demands attention.  A growing phobia can be crippling, preventing us from living a free and healthy life. If a nightmare is alerting us to a creeping neurosis, that doesn’t mean it isn’t relevant.

As children, we’re plagued by nightmares more frequently.  Children experience fear daily yet must prevail.  The world they find themselves inhabiting is vast and those around them so much larger and stronger.  Loving adults can help in providing safety and respite but there are by necessity, times when they cannot offer the assurance of safety so craved.

Encouraging children to talk through their nightmares and offering them suggestions about how to imaginatively deal with the monsters, will facilitate the child to feel empowered and less threatened.  The most beneficial approach to take with a child awakening from a nightmare, is to guide them to imagine themselves more powerful than the monster – see themselves grow in strength and stature – as opposed to seeing the monster shrink.  Shrinking monsters is the stuff of magical thinking but empowering ourselves is a skill well served throughout our lives.

Nightmares are as Pre-Cognitive as Other Dreams

Ignoring or discounting nightmares as only dreams won’t help in dealing with them.  Like most forgotten dreams, they will simply return.  Besides why waste all that sweat and terror?

Do what you can to interpret the meaning of the symbols, characters, feeling and action.  Imagine what the nightmare is asking you rather than telling you.  Further, imagine a couple of different endings.  Often a nightmare is interrupted by an abrupt awakening triggered by our increased heart rate and breath; use your imagination to envision what the ending might have been, especially one where you’re victorious.

A nightmare may even be a warning of something ahead that you need to know now!  Nightmares are as pre-cognitive as other types of dreams.

Use the nightmare as a creative inspiration.  Draw, paint or collage the images. Title your nightmare. The stories of Jekyl and Hyde, Frankenstein, and Dracula were all inspired by nightmares. When you describe a nightmare to someone, it is likely they will immediately identify and empathize with your experience.  There is nothing quite like a sharing a nightmare to bring an uncommon level of intimacy into your social intercourse.

The connections between the suffrage movement, spiritualism and the emerging notions of sanity throughout the latter part of the 19th century make a fascinating her-storical study.  I've spent more than 40 years researching and writing on subjects related to the psycho-spiritual realm and women.  From Yoga to Carl Jung, feminism to psychic development and literature to psychology, I've relentlessly sought answers to my restless soul's quest to understand the spiritual feminine.

The Spiritualist tradition has been in my family for two generations.  My mother and father's father were separated when my parents were divorced in the early '60's yet both attended the Spiritualist Church services in different cities spanning several decades. Following a parallel path yet neither knowing the other were serious followers of the same spiritual tradition.  The Spiritualist Church had an enormous impact on both their lives respectively.

People Wanted to Know More About the Spirit World

The budding romance of psychology and philosophy of the 19th century was keen to show that both spiritualist mediums and believers were mentally deranged.  Bombastically, spiritualism attracted the insane.  No doubt the popularity and buzz value of spiritualism was affording the new psychologies a weigh-in to centre stage.   Any religious experience that involved the suspension of everyday consciousness, including ecstatic divine communion or mediumship, was reducible to a pathological model.  Sadly, this remains an insidious barrier to authentic research in this field.

Considering that spiritualism is a gift to prove the existence of afterlife, this obnoxious and pseudo-scientific pronouncement has effectively kept spiritualism in a dark corner for most people.  Its growth has been systematically stunted on all fronts.  When it emerged in full force by the middle of the 19th century, the Titans of science and religion came out in full force to discredit, dishonour and obliterate it.  Interestingly, no matter how hard the Titans stomped, Spiritualism continued to grow like a weed. People wanted to know more about the spirit world. How it was organized, what souls did while there, how was it different from this corporal world and most of all, how can we reach these souls?  It seemed that gifted, trance mediums were the only ones willing and able to convey this information.

Women dominated the mediumship field by more than 100 to 1 male.  This didn't escape the notice of the medical profession, one of the most veraciously opposed of the Titans.  In females who were diagnosed with insanity, the disease was not surprisingly aligned with their sexuality. This explained why so many women succumbed to the pathological condition of mediumship (an interesting circular argument favoured by the Victorian mind).  Vibrancy and feminine sexuality were virtually contradictory notions.

There were a few gifted mediums in that enlightened period that challenged the notion that only males were designed for higher levels of spiritual attainment.  On the heels of the witch burnings there had to be an inordinate degree of prudence applied as the miracles performed by these mediums came into the public forum of debate.  All mediums were urged to emphasize their Christian roots and use language familiar and acceptable to the Christian majority.  There remain vestiges of this caution evident in many spiritualism adherents. Male dominated language and perceptions in the official doctrine of Spiritualism continues to this day.  Very odd considering!

Our Grandmother of Wisdom & Light

If you decide to pursue this line of query, I recommend Mrs. Cora L. V. Richmond be the first trance medium on your list to study.  Many claimed she was a female Avatar (the materialization in an earthly body, by choice, to promote an issue important for the progress of the human family) or announcer like John the Baptist.  She was exceptionally gifted and the best known Spiritual phenomenon of her day.   Cora was one of a kind.

She was born in 1840 in Cuba N.Y. and died in Chicago in early 1923.  When she was a young child, people travelled days to sit with her and be healed.  At 15 years old, she was on the stage going into deep trance and bringing forth messages that would affect the course of American history.  She attracted thousands of followers from around the world, inspired the brightest minds of the 19th century and was the first American woman to earn her own income.  Susan B. Anthony, the renowned feminist of the 19th century, was counted among her closest friends.

She was at the centre of the first Parliament of Religions in Chicago (yet was soon banned from attending).   The first Spiritualist Church was built for her followers in Chicago, called the Church of the Soul.

She wrote prolifically and her discourses under trance were all published.  She taught the most gifted mediums and attracted thousands to Cassadaga Camp every year (later called Lilydale).  The vestiges of this are evident in Lilydale's Waterlily Logo which was Cora's spirit world name given to her by one of her guides, Ouina.

Cora Richmond’s Brilliance & Gift are Un-Matched

Why do spiritualists today still fail to highlight the contributions made by this stunningly gifted medium? Why were her stories, writings, and teachings moved to the backstage of spiritualism's archives?  Why did they destroy her books and articles immediately after her death?  All questions worthy of ponder.

She was the most loved of the 19th century inspirational speakers.  She spent months at a time at the White House as one of Lincoln's mediums; William James cast her in his famous novel The Bostonians; and she attracted thousands of people in America and England to her discourses. She taught and supervised the development of the most gifted mediums at the time.  Her book published in 1888 titled, The Soul in its Human Embodiments was a primary training manual for mediumship study and development.

If for no other reason than curiosity, I highly recommend you study Cora’s works.  Her brilliance and gift are un-matched.

Psychic Kathleen on Youtube

It was believed (and still is by some) that an unhealthy body fosters the psychic gift.  I don’t know who is responsible for starting this erroneous rumour!  It was prevalent in the Spiritualist movement throughout the 19th century and continued to resurface throughout the early part of the 20th.  It’s waned certainly but every once in the while I stumble into this notion either through another psychic’s writings or a client who was introduced to this somewhere along in their journey prior to meeting me.

We live in a time now when body, mind and spirit are regarded as ONE.  Our knowledge base has grown and matured, providing us with a more realistic vision of ourselves as complex organisms with millions of interconnections that span our brain, heart, body, spirit and soul. Indeed, the concept of body, mind and spirit is far more prevalent in the beliefs of most who participate in the psychic world today. I count myself in this camp.

Does Using Our Psychic Senses Weaken Our Bodies?

I’ve observed a noticeable quickening in my cognition when my body is strong, flexible, relaxed and alert.  Why wouldn’t psychic ability be enhanced by a healthy, vibrant body too?

I’ve pondered, however whether it might be the other way around:  That energetically, using our psychic senses may drain so much energy from the body, it’s put at higher risk of failing.

Using psychic energy is draining.  Sometimes in the middle of a busy day, I’m completely zonked.  I’d say it might be like doing a triathlon but that wouldn’t be accurate because it’s not primarily a physical tiredness, it’s mental. I do however, feel it in my body. Body aches, stiffness and an exhaustion so deep I feel it in my bones.

I’m fortunate in that I’m a serious guardian of my good health and have been all my life.  I used to run home after school at 16 to do yoga with Karena’s Yoga on educational TV.  I’d nag my mother about preparing more meals with fresh rather than canned vegetables.  In fact, I was so keen on fresh, I offered to prepare all the evening meals for the family which my mother was only too happy to hand over.  My mother would giggle hysterically while my father gagged his way through home made soups, humous, wraps and salads (1972).

My family assumed I was just going through a "phase" I would eventually outgrow.  It turned out to be one that lasted the rest of my life. I think it’s just the way I came into this world. I have a small note to self written when I was 7, “Always eat well and get lots of exercise.”  I laughed finding it in a scrapbook my mother kept.

I don’t think I could have accomplished all I have done without having this motto and lots of luck to protect me. Taking good care of your health after all doesn’t guarantee you won’t get sick.

But being healthy hasn’t prevented or inhibited my work as a psychic.  Nor do I believe that being sick is going to make you more inclined to be a gifted psychic either.

Spiritual/Religious Traditions & their Guidance to Better Health

Most spiritual/religious traditions make some reference to the need to care for your physical body to achieve higher levels of consciousness.  A few of the ones that have stood out to me,

Buddhism in my opinion tops the list.  It offers extensive advice on body care through exercise, detoxification and proper diet.  Spine flexibility is emphasized to sit for extended lengths of time to meditate.  Buddhists believe that caring for your body one of several paths to enlightenment (Hatha Yoga).

My spiritual teacher always admonishes me to care for my kidneys since this is the organ where spirit enters the body.

Astrology teaches us that your Astrological sign will pre-determine the physical challenges that will need to be mitigated for and will likely be just those physical weaknesses that plague us later in life and inevitably be the very issue that drives us out of our bodies and into the realm of spirit.

Whatever spiritual tradition you follow it’s likely it has sage advice to offer about caring for your health. Furthermore, your spiritual tradition will teach you how not doing so may inhibit your ability to raise your consciousness and reach your spiritual aspirations.  I know when I’m feeling strong and healthy I do better work and provide a better service to my clients.

Make September mark when you commit to taking better care of your health. Now is always the ideal time to launch a new health regiment into your lifestyle which will hopefully aid you on your spiritual path as well.

Blessings Kathleen

"You were referred to me by a friend, Linette.  She has the highest praise for you!

I haven’t had my Tarot cards read by a psychic before.  But I am very open (as opposed to skeptical).

I would like a thorough reading, perhaps an hour or hour and a half.  I don’t have specific questions but more of a general ….  actually, the best way to put that is I’m a bit lost in all areas of my life.

Thank you for your time.  I look forward to hearing back from you.

Most people believe in fate sometimes.  On a daily, mundane basis you probably don’t think about it all that much. It comes to the fore when something either extraordinarily wonderful or terrible happens.

The notion makes us feel cared for when the felt fated event is joyful and it makes us feel lonely when the outcome is devastating.  To be loved or cursed.  “Why do all these terrible things keep happening to me when I’m such a good person?”, we lament.  Something is not right in the world when we choose to be honourable and can’t seem to catch a break. The notion of fate can then make us feel targeted.

Aside from good luck or bad, what makes us think something was fated to happen?  Is it because there was such a small window of timing for the wondrous event to take place?  Is it because we dreamed of the happening beforehand?  Or perhaps because it feels like no matter what we do, the outcome is habitually positive or negative?  Indeed, if everything in our lives is fated to be, why make any effort at all?

Being Somewhere at the Right Time is Everything

The question is, “Who or what controls the strings of our destiny?”  A deity, ourselves or some other machination that is comprised of many factors and influences?  For example, if it is my fate to meet you, then we shared a thread of common fate which has led us to this point of joining.  Fate therefore is comprised of many threads and if any of those single threads were to break then our joining would be missed.

We’ve all met someone we’ve felt a special connection to and noticed the timing was off.  One of us was on our way out of town, or just gotten married, or on our death bed.  Of course, that was our fate but that won’t stop us from groaning, “Why now?”  Being at the right place at the right time is everything.  Can that be arranged? Wouldn’t we like to think so!  Fate drives us to reach more deeply into our emotional core where fear and desire wage a bloody war.

There is a dearth of books on the market that promise that if you do the right thing; visioning a beautiful and abundant future for example, it will come to you.  How do we reconcile this notion when that just isn’t the case?  Because the truth is that terrible things do happen to good people.  And wonderful things do happen to selfish bastards.

The Wheel of Fortune

Are there ways we can glimpse into our fated future?  I’m a specialist in this regard since many do consult me as an oracle to glimpse their fate. Being placed in the occasionally, unfortunate position to describe a less than desirable fated future is a challenge. I couldn’t count how many people have come to me for a reading exclaiming that they had just spoken with another psychic who promised a rosier future.  Many psychics find it too unpleasant to relate an ill begotten fate, so they opt for the happy ending narrative.

The Tarot features a card which specifically addresses this concept of fate; The Wheel of Fortune,  “When you draw the Wheel, you are approaching one of those moments in life when Fate does take a hand in your affairs. Strange coincidences, fortunate meetings, and lucky breaks can all shape your destiny at this time.  You may feel as if your life script has been written by someone else.” (The Illustrated Book of Tarot by Jane Lyle)

In a classic interpretation, the Wheel of Fortune heralds a change coming in our fortunes for the better. It might work best for us (from a fated perspective) if we suffer now because that is the mechanism that will initiate changes in our lives for ultimately the better but certainly in a reading today that won’t be a welcome bit of news.  It might for example take decades for the good of the bad to become evident.  Who wants to embrace misery until the good makes its welcome appearance?

Adapting to Change

We don’t have control over everything and there are times in our lives when, for some mysterious reason, it becomes opportune to be given that message.  When fate steps in to throw us a curve ball, it’s an opportunity to contemplate our lives from a whole new perspective. Maybe fate’s true purpose is to urge us to ask ourselves important questions; such as,

“Is what I think I want, truly what I want?”

“Am I getting what I asked for and didn’t realize it?”

“What have I been missing that is more about what I need as opposed to what I want?”

“Am I pushing an agenda that the universe is declaring loud and clear, THIS PATH IS NOT FOR YOU?”

When Lady Fortuna takes charge of our lives, it’s likely more a lesson about adapting to change.  Those who survive are those who are good at adapting.  Is there a way to know your fate?  I like to think there is and that knowing your fate beforehand is an integral part of your fated future.  We might not be able to alter our fate but it can help when we’re prepared.

The best description of fate I ever heard was that it represents a dance between opportunity and character.  Being prepared is character, being in the right place at the right time is opportunity.

We sometimes forget that when we're using words, we are passing symbols back and forth. This means we must make assumptions like for example, that we agree upon the meaning of these symbols. Words like soul, spirit, psyche, enlightenment, love and hate are a few that carry heavy associations for most of us and can be difficult to get right.

Our word-symbols of emotional states are perhaps the most assumption rich of all.  We say, “I’m feeling angry”.  The recipient of this word-symbol may have a myriad of meanings attached to this word-symbol that we don’t share at all. They might assume this anger is accompanied with hatred.  We can feel love and anger at the same time. Never assume when someone says they are feeling angry that this means they don’t like you.  Anger pushes us to make changes in our lives, to establish better boundaries and feel alive. No relationship will not trigger anger at some point in it’s journey.

Words have power as we all know by how they can affect us emotionally, physically and intellectually. Our whole lives are based on our interaction with words. There is a story of a woman who entered psychoanalysis because, among a few other things, she wouldn't stop bleeding. Her menstrual cycle had stalled on steady flow. As she was leaving her first session with the psychiatrist, she turned to him and asked, "What about my bleeding? Will it stop?" And he replied, "Yes it stops right now." And it did. Those words at that moment, spoken by this man perceived as an authority healer, had the power to kick start this woman's cycle. That is an example of the power of words.  Remember the last time you said, “I love you”?  Not to someone you say it to all the time or has an expectation to hear it from you, but someone you have never said it to previously?  Do you remember their reaction or yours? I bet you do.

The placebo affect is another example. If we are told by someone that a substance will make us well and we have vested this person with the power of knowledge and authority, the chances are high that the substance will have the desired healing affect. This is not a bad thing! Placebos have no side affects.

Word-symbols heal, destroy, bring us tremendous pain, pleasure and joy.  They elevate us to the stratosphere or drive us to the depths of despair and suicidal ideation.

Written Word Has Always Carried Mystery & Awe

The power of the spoken word dwarfs in comparison to the power of the written one. When we read a word, we imbue it with even more substance and power. We tend to believe what we read, making an often erroneous assumption that if it is published it must be the truth. This hearkens back to a time when the aristocratic and academic classes owned reading and writing. There was mystery and awe in the minds of the majority when in the presence of someone who could read and write. They were granted celestial powers of discernment, authority and interpretation.

You must be especially vigilant in considering this power in this world of texting and the internet. We still take the written word seriously and unless you are gifted and skilled at using word-symbols accurately, I would avoid texting altogether except to perform the most mundane of tasks like arranging a time to meet.  Don’t, under any circumstances share your deepest feelings, thoughts, dreams, visions in text form unless you have researched the precise word-symbols you need to express them precisely.  More couples, friendships, family ties are being ripped apart these days through the exchange of a few lines of text, than ever in our human her/history.

I remember the days when emails became the speedy means of text exchange.  Compared to snail mail it was a miracle, trust me. Soon into the practice, wise advisors were cautioning users to put their emails in our draft folders for at least 24 hrs before pressing that SEND button.  Then along came “texting” and all that sage advice was forgotten. People launched immediately into texting back and forth at break neck speed.  Not even a second was claimed to carefully ponder what was being written to the person on the receiving end, potentially leaving a track of destruction in it’s wake a mile wide.

It’s a tsunami of mass social destruction. I want to yell from the highest rooftop, “STOP TEXTING” but I fear it would just get lost in the wind. Texting should be, “Want to meet for coffee?”  “How about Sunny’s at 2?”  “I’ll pick up a chicken for dinner, is there anything you want with it?”

Not, “My girlfriend saw you kissing a woman at Sunny’s last night – who was she you bastard?” This is the sort of conversation better explored in person because there are simply too many variables. Are you mad, teasing, flirting, testing?  The recipient has no idea but betting on mad might just end things between you right there!

Word-Symbols Heal, Uplift & Create

I had a dream the other day that I was conversing with two women who were involved in a lively debate that I desperately wanted to participate in.  I couldn’t get any words to come out of my mouth.  All I could emit was a pathetic croak or squeak.  They looked at me exasperated and pitying. No matter how hard I tried I just couldn’t speak.  It was terrible. Upon awakening I was so relieved to realize this was a dream. It spurred me to consider how grateful I am for speech. That I do have a voice, that I can participate and say my piece, that I can be heard. I can read and write too!

You can use this power to bring goodness and healing to this world.  You can use your power to use word-symbols to uplift, educate and create and yes one voice at a time, change the world.

Why Can’t I Get Over this Lover?

I’m asked almost daily by heartbroken clients,

“Why can’t I get over this lover?”  This is an equal opportunity dis-ease. Meaning that age, sex, cultural heritage, religion, professions all melt away to irrelevance in the face of love heartbreak. We’re all the same,

“Why does so-and-so, who has rejected me… or is mean spirited, and/or in love with someone else adhere to my soul like crazy glue?  I dream about them, worry about their welfare, think about them every minute of the day, and just quite simply ADORE them despite how little regard they obviously have towards me.  What is WRONG with me!? Am I nuts?”

In a desperate bid to negotiate a rational explanation, some people will decide they must have known this person in another life and divine providence has reunited them for another shot at bliss.  This explanation is especially salient if their meeting was synchronistic, or they share an extrasensory connection.

Not being a proponent of reincarnation personally,

I find this explanation especially irrational…and well yes bizarre if truth be told. Why the divine would consider your need to resolve your supposed past life love issues worthy of such complicated cosmic machinations is… well, inflated to be blunt. But then my notions of divine intervention are probably just as odd.  My imagination is more inclined to conjure divinities in possession of one heck of a Teutonic and rather irreverent sense of humour, Who observe our embodied love challenge with detached and very occasionally, affectionate curiosity.

There are two primary emotions

that comprise the trunk of our emotional tree.  Fear and love.  The rest are branches and suckers that grow off this dual, primary trunk.  Fear and love are opposite emotions.  We cannot (or perhaps it would be better to say should not unless sado-masochism floats your boat) feel both at the same time.  When we are afraid we cannot feel love and visa versa.

We often mistakenly believe we cannot hate and love at the same time but we can because they are the flip side of the same emotional coin.  When we are having difficulty letting go of that forever-after-dream of the love we shared with someone, we are operating under two illusions.

The biggest one is that you can help that person not to feel so afraid and thereby let the love flow back in again. Even utilizing all the power accessible to you in the universe, you cannot make another feel brave, daring, risk-taking or be honest.

I get asked that a lot too.  What can I do to change or fix this? It’s funny we don’t have any trouble understanding this rather mean-spirited one-sidedness when it comes to ourselves. Hasn’t someone had the hots for you and left you feeling rather cold, indifferent and maybe even, dare I say? A little repulsed? Unless you’re ten years old I find it hard to believe you haven’t.

Is there ANYTHING they could have done to light your fire in their direction?  Is there anything they could have said or changed about themselves that would have spurred you to rush at them naked?  No? That too is the same for all of us universally.

The second illusion is that they prefer to feel love

and will choose it freely once they realize how paltry life is without it. They aren’t like you that way.  You might have been on the same page with just about everything else. But the intimacy part?  You were not on the same page with that.  There are Snake Oil sales people who will promise to change all that for a modest or horrendous fee but don’t be fooled.  No one has the power to change fear into love in a person’s soul, or water into wine.  Remember that parable? Only we have that power over ourselves.

Don’t feel abnormal or crazy because you love someone so much you just can’t seem to get past it.  That is the risk you were willing to embrace.  Be excited about your own bravery and honesty.  That is the gift of love. Know that by keeping up the faith and giving of yourself so generously and lovingly, someday in the not-so-distant-future, another will spot your light and rush towards its glow with the same abandonment in which you are prepared to give.

In the meantime, it’s really the dream of sharing that depth of intimacy

that is keeping you stuck in the ruminations, recriminations, pondering, wishing, yearning and yes at those irresistible moments, texting! The desire to connect is powerful in us – its one of those hard-wired aspects of our psyche that is linked to survival, reproduction and safety.

The most helpful thing for you to do is to pray for them.  Pray for their happiness, good health and spiritual enlightenment.  Send them your love (not by texting, NO texting) in your heart.  One day you’ll wake up and realize you have moved on and that really sexy, sweet smiling person you met the other day…is wondrously taking up more and more of your psychic space.

I often receive emails and phone calls from desperate people seeking help and spiritual direction regarding possession, curses, and all manner of pesky, dark and invasive entities.  Caught in a vortex of fear, people are willing to do anything to free themselves of this perceived blight on their lives. Attributing everything from their financial ruin to relationship disintegration on a curse they were told had been placed on them or their family up to a millennium ago.  For those who adhere to a belief in reincarnation, this fear assumes alarming and gargantuan proportions.

Confusion About the Spirit World

Light, love and good are intensely more overpowering forces than dark, fear and evil.  When you are in a shudder-less dark room and light a candle, notice how much light is cast into the room?  Enough to see another person or make out where objects are placed.

Conversely, imagine yourself in a sunny room and notice how much shadow is cast by an object.  Does it throw the bright room into a pitch blackness? or are you still able to see everything in the room?  When you meet someone who is afraid and you offer a warm smile, does this not easily relax their fear?  When you are having an upsetting, nothing-going-right sort of day and someone smiles warmly with a friendly gesture, do you notice how all the day's frustrations suddenly melt away from your mind?  A little love seems to go a long way just like a little candle lit in the darkness.

If I am mindfully honourable and act in a loving manner towards others; if I work in the light and believe in the power of love and goodness, how could darkness overwhelm me?

If I believe that I am cursed, I must ask myself why I insist on staying in the shadow.  If everything in my life feels terrible, it isn't that someone has sent a bad spirit to plague me, it's that I'm not asking the highest and best to be with me.  Whenever you ask spirit to be with you, always request for the highest and the best to assist you.

When We Pass onto the World of Spirit

it's like the mirror image of the material plane, only reversed.  Those who persistently attach themselves to the material plane will remain so attached in spirit, meaning they will be on the lowest level of spiritual existence.  This is why people were admonished to be cautious when using tools like the Ouji Board.  Do you know who or what you are inviting for a visit? Untrained, you could easily be inviting any spirit in the astral plane (the lowest and most earthbound plane) to parlay with you and unless they are there out of love it could very well be for purposes of their own design which may or may not match your own.

Who are Your Spirit Guides?

Frankly I don't trust anyone here on earth is qualified to tell me that.  This is a gift you will receive from spirit directly through a series of synchronistic signs, symbols, dreams and visions when the connection is ready to be established.  Trust in what you know to be true.  You want those of the highest celestial realms to be with you in your times of suffering and desperation.  The brightest lights in the celestial realms easily dispel any darkness cast by those ignorant spirits caught still between the worlds.  We cannot be cursed or attacked unless we are persistently acting in darkness.

Just like you need to work in the light here on earth, so must you do in spirit.  If you sincerely and fervently believe you are cursed by an ignorant spirit, ask with a selfless heart that they be brought into the light by those most spiritually advanced in the celestial realm.  Immediately the light dispels their darkness and you are left to live your life in peace.

Quote from Cora L. V. Richmond (my spiritual guide)

“Have you ever seen how in the midst of truth, falsehood betrays itself and strives to fly away from the peaceful yet clear light of the vanquishing nature of truth? Such is the condition of ignorance and crime.

In spirit life, immured in one's own condition, one may not be aware that one's state is a state of negation, because to the individual the reality of one's own state becomes more and more apparent, and more and more appalling.

Such must have been the states of darkness into which Dante gazed when he looked into purgatory; this condition within the individual where they bear with them their atmosphere of darkness, and conscious of their own condition, how could they be powerful to do harm to others?

The humans of evil intentions are like pirates instead of merchant ships, and passing into spirit life, they carry with them the mists and shadows of their own state, and they would strike blindly if they struck forth to injure others.

It is singular law of spiritual existence that the centre of attraction for every spiritual force is the individual, and that as the individual is bright, or beautiful, or good, all spiritual force that resembles that state will be drawn toward the individual.

If you send forth prayers, they return into blessings; if you send forth good thoughts, they return in beautiful images to surround you; and if you send forth shadows, they envelope you in shadows, for you surround yourself with your own thoughts and conceptions.

If it were possible for the spirit to steal, think of murder, revenge, or any condition resembling those states, that same law of which we speak would send this thought back upon him or herself, and redouble the shadows around them, until by the very overwhelming weight of their own condition the spirit would strive to overcome it.”

Cora eloquently describes how it would be for a spirit sending you negative energy from the spirit world. The negative energy would increase the shadows around them exponentially until the spirit would be energized to finally overcome it.  Spirits cannot send you negative energy nor do we have the power to boss spirit around. I cannot tell a spirit to attack you – well I can but it would be a wasted breath. There is no such thing as curses!  There is only your own belief in their existence that powers the shadow effect.  It is your own energy coming back to you.

If someone in any way suggests you have been “cursed”, laugh and move on because that curse they believe was sent to you is redoubling back on them. Don’t be duped into paying someone to remove a curse that doesn’t exist.
