Psychic Kathleen

Confessions of a Psychic - the life of a psychic practicing off and online in Canada for more than 30 years.
As you might imagine, I’m often asked by heart-broken clients,

“Why can’t I get over this guy/girl?  Do you know when I’m going to stop crying, obsessing, feeling horrible, depressed and down on myself?!”  This is an equal opportunity agony!  Age, sex, cultural heritage, religion, profession, self confidence make no difference. We’re all the same,

“Why does so-and-so adhere to my soul like crazy glue?  I dream about them, worry about their welfare, think about them every minute of the day despite how little regard they have towards me.  What is WRONG with me!? Am I nuts?  Are they coming back?”

In a desperate bid to negotiate an explanation, people jump to all manner of irrational conclusions, such as, they knew this person in another life and divine providence has reunited them for another shot at bliss which their deserter has failed to notice YET.  This explanation is especially compelling if their meeting was synchronistic, or they share a psychic connection.  I always doubt this interpretation and usually when rationality returns, the rejected see why this explanation is unlikely.

Primary Emotions

There are two primary emotions that comprise the trunk of our emotional tree.  Fear and love.  The rest of our emotions are like branches and suckers that grow off this dual, primary emotional train.  Fear and love are opposite emotions and we shouldn’t be feeling them both at the same time.  If we do, it signals a mental illness that needs special attention and healing.  Sado-masochism, co-dependency and self-pity, for example, are symptoms when we feel both love and fear simultaneously.

Many mistakenly believe we cannot feel hate and love at the same time, but we can and typically do because they are the flip side of the same emotional coin. We do feel hate towards those we deeply love.  Remember how you felt about your parents when you were a teenager?

Love’s Illusions

When we are having difficulty letting go of that forever-after-dream of the love we shared with someone, we are operating under two illusions:  One is that you can help that person defeat their limiting, relationship/commitment fears which will open the channels to allow the love to flow back in again. Even utilizing all the power accessible to you in the universe, you cannot make another want to take a risk or make a commitment to you.

People ask me, “What can I (or better yet you, Kathleen) do to change their feelings towards me?”

I often smile to myself about how easy it is to understand this apparent mean-spirited one-sidedness when it comes to ourselves. Hasn’t someone burned hot for you, yet for whatever reason left you feeling cold, indifferent and maybe even, dare I say… a tad repulsed?

Is there ANYTHING they could have done to ignite your fire?  Is there anything they could have said or changed about themselves that would have spurred you to wax poetic?  No? Or better yet would you want this person to have access to a Magician that could alter your feelings towards them? What a terrifying thought!

Illusion #2

Your love interest doesn’t really know how they feel and once you’ve awakened them (like Sleeping Beauty) they will realize they do truly love you.  There are sly and sneaky people who will promise to help you awaken your love interest to their true feelings for you for a modest or horrendous fee.  Don’t be fooled.  No one has the power to make someone love you. Only we have the power to change ourselves and even that is questionable when we can’t even make ourselves get over someone that clearly doesn’t share our feelings!

Don’t feel abnormal or crazy because you love someone more than they love you and can’t seem to stop.  That was the risk you were willing to embrace.  Be excited about your bravery, honesty and willingness to be vulnerable.  That is the gift of love. Know that by keeping up the faith and giving of yourself so generously and lovingly, some day another will catch your light and rush towards its glow with the same abandonment in which you are prepared to give.

The Dream of  a Deep and Abiding Intimacy

The desire to connect is powerful in us – its one of those hard-wired aspects of our psyche that is linked to survival, reproduction and safety.

The most helpful thing you can do to help yourself recover from this unshared love is to pray for the subject of your desire.  Pray for their happiness, good health and spiritual enlightenment.  Send them your love (not by texting, NO texting!).  One day you’ll wake up and realize you have moved on and that sexy, sweet smiling person you met the other day…is wondrously taking up more and more of your psychic space.

Celebrate your ability to love that deeply and unselfishly. It’s a bounty of your abiding and generous spirit.  It’s what makes you special and to be chosen to be the conduit of this special love is a divinely inspired gift.  Don’t despair!  It’s not a sign that you’re crazy at all but rather one that you’re transformational and enlightened.

Blessings Kathleen

"Thanks to  you Kathleen and your special gift  I  will do  my  best  to  be  strong  and  welcome  change. Thanks  a  lot.  You helped me a lot to start to accept things that happened. I’m sorry I got emotional.

You gave me clarification and reminded me to be careful of my decisions. When I hung up the phone I thought of my dreams. Twice I dreamed of a woman who was in the dark and I don’t see her face…everything is dark.

You have a very warm heart and I will keep in mind your advice. Thanks a lot. I look forward to another reading.

“Spiritualism has inaugurated the era of woman,” proclaimed Mary Davis in 1880. I bet that date surprises you.  As early as the mid to late 1800’s, Spiritualist conventions, gatherings and writings all called for the emancipation of women.  Those who assumed the most radical positions on woman's rights became Spiritualists (for example, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who was also a close friend of Cora Richmond – my spirit guide)  This shouldn’t be surprising since all evolutionary steps can be traced to the spirit world’s guidance and intervention.

Spirit Warnings & Interventions

Many are hoping the spirit world will now help us to make the necessary changes to heal our sick earth.  For sure, we can’t claim we haven’t been forewarned.  I’ve been an active member of the environmental movement since 1972 and I can’t say I’m impressed in the least.  In fact, I’m more discouraged than ever.  The equator has shifted further north due to the reduction in ice weight in the north and south poles (see the scorching hot temps in the UK and Europe); erosion is dismantling shorelines around  the world and our oxygen engines (forests) are dying due to fires, hot temps, and unprecedented pest populations out of control. To say we are in deep trouble is putting it mildly.   We’re fast approaching the most massive extinction event since the dinosaurs and as humans we’re high on that list.

The Comstock Book Burnings

Back in the 1800’s not all feminists were Spiritualists, but all Spiritualists advocated equality for women. Women were equal to men within a Spiritualist practice, polity, and ideology.  This was inherent in a religious practice in which truth was revealed to individuals without recourse to an external authority (always males and typically Priests).  In the mid 19th century there were eleven million Spiritualists out of a population of twenty-five million in the US.  This growing faith spread fast around the world but was severely crippled when it was subjected to the massive book burnings with the Comstock book censorship law. Today we have the same problem with book burnings. Not literally but figuratively speaking.  Witness those who deny environmental catastrophe and denigrate scientific query and warning.  I shudder to think what future generations will say about our generation.  If any survive.

The mid-19th century spiritualist movement was the cyclonic force of the feminist movement.  In manner of dress, the right to speak in public forums, to own their own money, to be spiritual leaders, and to declare a woman's right to equality, the spiritualists cleared the path.  In Spiritualism the place of worship was relocated to the home from church, or temple.  Spirit circles gathered around parlour tables, a most appropriate place for women to preside.

The medical society deemed mediumship a medical disorder causing rebellion against gender roles. On the other hand, Spiritualism taught women to exercise self-healing properties in her own nature and to develop a more egalitarian relationship with her doctor.   Now those who warn of the illness in our air and oceans are called extremists, alarmists and negativists. It’s never been popular to be an environmentalist.  We’ve been called, “Unrealistic, anti-business, and regressive.”

The persecution of the young female medium suffered at the hands of self- proclaimed psychic investigators was reminiscent of the earlier witch hunts. Mediums were bound to chairs, locked in small cupboards, naked, supposedly to assure sitters they weren't hiding any tricks in their skirts. Despite this stress, mediums were expected to provide proof that they communed with the spirit world which a surprising number of them succeeded in doing!

More Prophecy than Prescription

Equality between the sexes was lauded from the spiritualists as a spiritual imperative from the spirit world meaning that it was divinely prescribed and ordained. Spiritualists believed, as one advocate put it, that woman's freedom is the world's redemption.  Today we know that was more prophecy than prescription.

The seeds of modernism, psychoanalysis, communications, human rights, longevity were all brought from the unseen world to the seen in this most spiritual, glorious age.

The her/his tory of religion has taught us that the further we move in time away from the original spiritual message, the more it morphs, disintegrates, and ultimately decays.  Spirituality is a dynamic force and has the power to alter the consciousness of humans, the course of our collective destiny and ultimately our ability to thrive.  Its temple is the heart, its expression is in the actions we take every day of our lives.

If you are inspired by feminism and spirituality, I highly recommend you research this fascinating spiritual herstory. It’s a study rich in joy, surprise and affirmation.  If you are worried about what the scientists are saying about our environment, I highly recommend you get involved. There may be a day when you’re grateful you did become involved when it might have made a difference.  Don’t be complacent.  Don’t be one of those who persecuted Cassandra – be one of those who listened and did everything you could to make it better.

Happy Spring!

Spring, like fall, is a season when we feel an awakening to new possibilities.   Like the budding plants and newborn chicks, a part of us that has been dormant in the long, dark nights of winter start nudging for emergence.  People start booking trips to parts unknown or even think about moving, changing jobs or retiring, leaving relationships and beginning new ones.

This psychic dynamic doesn’t travel in a straight line from the unseen to the seen.  It often travels by way of an intermediary or a host.

Projecting Our New-Found Inner Gold

In a desperate bid to grab our attention, after having tried rather unsuccessfully many other tools at its disposal like dreams, our unconscious self will project our new-found inner gold onto a person.  Promptly we are consumed by every new little thing we discover about that person.  The first inkling of this psychic dynamic at play is when the other person appears to be so luminous that they practically glow in the dark.

That’s a sure sign that something is changing in us and we are projecting our gold because NO ONE is that great, right?  We might call them a guru, mentor, teacher, guide or…yikes… yes a lover! (Hence we also declare Spring is the time for love.)

While we are celebrating the magnificent, fantastic, astounding things we attribute to the other person, we are really seeing our own inner, secret depth and meaning.  Our inner gold has become just too unwieldly for us to embrace so we assign someone else to carry it for us for a time.  Eventually we’ll gain enough psychic strength to carry the load ourselves and we’ll take it back from them. Not typically the most pleasant of experiences.

The Power of Our Life Force Depends Upon their Grace

Projecting our inner gold gifts us a unique opportunity to advance in consciousness and spiritual development. When we see that we have given our spiritual gold to someone to hold for us, there are a myriad of ways in which we might respond.  We follow them with an eagle eye wherever they go.  Their smile can raise us to heavenly heights, and their frown will hurl us to hellish depths.  Every nuance of their actions and expressions are absorbed in minute detail.  A quirk of their eyebrow, a slight smile forming at the corner of their mouths, or their silence can affect how we feel that day.  The power in our life force seems to hinge on their approval or sanction.

In our culture, a mutual exchange of our inner gold is upheld as the prerequisite for marriage (this is when the inner gold projection falls under the rubric of falling in love).  You’ve projected your gold, your deepest inner value, onto the other person.  You’ve given it to them to incubate for a while, until you are ready to take it back.  For the relationship to succeed, you WILL have to take it back.

Unfortunately, that’s always accompanied with disillusionment.  The gold comes clattering home by way of disappointment.  A solid marriage can only prevail on human love, which is different from romantic love, being in love, or loveness.
Our human life, our marriage, is fed by the capacity to love human to human.  When we’re in love, we put our gold- our expectations – on the other person, and this process sadly obliterates them from our view.

Projections Must Be Brought Home to Achieve True Relatedness

There is no relatedness between two people in this equation.  We are not able to truly see the other person as they are unto themselves.  We only see the projection of our own inner gold.

Recently a client (and she’s not alone by any means!) confessed that she annoyingly only seemed to fall in love with bad boys.  Never the decent, commitment sort of fellows.

I asked her if she’d ever considered buying a BAD motorcycle.  She looked at me astounded and said, “YES!  I’ve been secretly coveting one of those for years.”
I said, “Do it!!  You won’t have such a craving for bad boys because you’ll be giving your inner bad boy space for expression.  No longer a need to project him onto another, you’ll find yourself inexplicably attracted to rather ordinary, nice fellows that make great mates and dads.  Like you, he’ll be a bad-boy biker at night and a rather square banker during the day.”

Know that that wondrous feeling of falling in love doesn’t have to last forever to be the best thing that ever happened to you. It may be serving the most important purpose of all which is to awaken you to the spiritual riches lying quietly within, sprouting buds and bursting to be realized. Whether lover, guide or mentor, your gold carrier maybe just the right combination to nurture and carry the load until you’re ready.  You’ll know when it’s time to schlep your own gold.  Your assigned gold carrier has become unworthy and, in all likelihood, has strolled off with hardly a backward glance.

Have a growing, joyous and fulfilling April.

Not at all meaning to minimize the value of imagination or wishful thinking! Imagination and psychic insight are interconnected which is why it’s hard to differentiate one from the other.

Part of what makes a psychic development class so special, is the immediate feedback from another, either validating or correcting what you’re perceiving psychically. Your “testers” aren’t loved ones or even friends, just fellow travellers on the purple road.

A Physical Connection Fosters an Emotional Connection which Supports Psychic Insight

Each class in my psychic development course was a focus upon one area of psychic ability. In the second class, we explored telepathy and remote viewing. Sitting across from a partner, you were asked to rhythmically breathe together to achieve a deeper, nonverbal level of connection. Breath synchronization is a powerful tool to forge a bond. Healers use this tool to create simpatico with a client. Savvy sales people know how to do this too!

Further along in this telepathy exercise, students were instructed to hold hands with their partners and then while transmitting or receiving messages, to put their hands on the forehead of their partners. These exercises are designed to demonstrate how a physical connection can, and often does foster an emotional connection which in turn will facilitate a psychic connection.

One of the students had recently suffered a broken heart and everyone in the class picked up on the depth of this member’s sadness. It was a powerful moment in the class when everyone realized they had been picking up on a deep sadness in a fellow student which had been overwhelming most of the intentional psychic messages passed among the pairs of students.

This phenomena highlighted a process which motivated me to stop allowing more than one person at a time in my reading room. Sometimes the energy of one in the room overwhelms the energy of the reading and the whole story becomes about them, not the client who came in with an issue!

In the early stages of your psychic development, you’ll have to run with your imagination for a while until you’re able to discern the difference between imagination and psychic insight.

From Where or Whom is Transmitting These Psychic Messages Anyway?

Determining whose thought process this psychic message belongs to and what to do with it, is your next challenge. If you are receiving what you believe to be spiritual messages steering you along a path you would normally consider immoral or unhealth, then chances are these are coming from your shadow self.

Furthermore, you should be wary of any impressions which are in direct accordance with your wishes. When human desire is activated, there is lack of clarity in the perception of truth, particularly if your desire is a selfish one. Love, not desire is the source of all that is in spirit.

We all have wishes that we know will remain unfulfilled. This can be so annoying and stressful that our imaginations are ignited to fulfill this desire and ease the tension within us. That’s why reading for ourselves is rarely helpful.

Even having a dear friend read for you can be problematic. A loved one can be even more invested than you, in reading an outcome you deserve. I always warn my students about this snag. Be careful to avoid reading for loved ones – pass them along to another student. Share your relatives and friends! The reading has a better chance at accuracy and honesty.

Are Your Messages Selfish?

Trust only your impressions and intuitions that come at variance with your selfish wishes, for they are not only from the inner nature of your own spirit, but are doubtless the promptings of the guardian spirit to lead you aright. The moral energies intervene and frequently an impression may be in direct opposition to your individual wish and will. If the impression however does come upon a subject that you have no knowledge of and no judgement on, and an impression distinctly comes, obey it, for in nearly every instance when you do not obey, you regret it.

If you are attributing a message to spirit, the first question you must ask yourself, “Am I hoping for a particular outcome?” If there is even a hint of yes, you are very likely caught in a rationalization of wishful thinking and listening to the voice of desire not spirit.

Have an enlightening Spring Equinox on every level!

Years ago, I taught a class on growing/honing your psychic ability along with several other esoteric/psych courses such as, how to interpret your dreams and reading the Tarot for self & others.  Usually a dozen of us met weekly X 2 hours X 8 weeks. During the first half of each class, I chatted on a particular divination tool and the psychic ability that would flourish well with that tool.  The second half of each class was a psychic practice exercise both for development and understanding.  In between the work and laughter, we told inspiring psychic stories.  It was great fun, most of all for me.

I had “testing” nights at the beginning, half way through and at the last class to gauge/measure how everyone’s ability had shifted through their work in the class.

Zener Cards

Zener cards were one of our primary measuring tools.  I discovered the Zener cards in 1971 when I was preparing for a presentation to my Grade 10 Physics Class on psychic ability. At 15 I thought psychic ability would be the perfect subject matter to break the typical tedium of physics for most students.  It was!  When I asked at the end if there were any questions, I was stormed with all sorts of comments and questions. Even the teacher was intrigued and had a host of questions that he wanted to ask me after class. Nothing untoward of course, he was just a closet psychic freak.

The Zener cards have been in production and use by the Rhine Institute since the ‘30’s for psychic ability testing.  You can still find Zener cards through most metaphysical outlets.  They can be fun to play with your friends and family.  You might even want to launch your own psychic ability exploration group.  It just takes one to get it started.

A Pendulum

One of the psychic tools we studied and practiced in our class was the pendulum.  The origins of the pendulum would be as difficult to track her/storically as the Tarot, but at some point in time there is a record of a pregnant woman fashioning a simple pendulum out of a probably worn-out darning needle on the end of a thread.  The woman or a diviner if one was handy, would suspend the needle over the woman’s abdomen and watch for which direction the suspended needle would go first.  The pendulum continued to develop over the 20th century but like all divination tools, it’s not a guaranteed perfect fit for you. You might have to practice with many different pendulums until you find one that consistently reliable to you.  Just a warning that this process might take many years.  If you have an opportunity to take a pendulum class with an experienced diviner and good teacher, don’t hesitate!  You can’t beat in person training for this tool.

Men interested in pendulum power tended to feel a greater affinity to divining rods.  Rods are typically but not exclusively used to search for minerals and water.  Both practices are based on the same principles.  People have used this method to find lost or stolen objects, make decisions, and heal.  The pendulums spiraling energy can be used for healing in the hands of a spiritual healer with the kinesthetic psychic gift.

The pendulum is another handy tool to begin your intuition/psychic ability explorations because of its use in answering simple yes and no questions. It’s portable, simple and quick.

There are many psychic tools available to the aspiring psychic aficionado, but most psychics use their own feelings, intuitions, senses, insights more than any tool. Tools can be handy and sometimes it’s more about confirmation and validation.  Sometimes the tool affords you an opportunity to look at the situation from a different perspective.

I wish you a glorious February. Here in the northern atmosphere, February is like our month of rest.  Take advantage! Spring Equinox is only a month away and brings with it demands of busy-ness.  Some welcome and some not so much.  In February, we can be warmly excused for our cocooning because of the weather, darkness and flu season or we can even say we’re taking it easy to prevent a threatening flu/cold.  Everyone nods sagely in understanding. We’ve all been caught with a spring cold that lingers annoyingly almost to summer.  Take it easy this month, get lots of rest, fortify yourself for 2019 spring just around the corner.

Kathleen Meadows M.A. Psychic Reader

Every time I hear, “2019”, “2020” is right on its heels. There is something about the number 19 that just rolls into thinking “20”. An end of cycle type of year.

I’ll be turning into a senior citizen officially at the end of 2019 which feels like kind of a big deal. Not that I’m expecting any wowees or significant changes to my lifestyle, it’s more of an internal shift. It’s like when you’re turning 30, 40 or 50.

If you haven’t hit that mid-sixties mark, you’ll just have to take my word when I say that no other has felt quite as momentous as this one. This one seems to carry with it a sort of finality or endgame. Not that we can ever go back at any age but somehow turning 65 means I might want to more. I’ve been asked for a few years now whether I’m eligible for the senior discount and I live in a 55+ building where admittedly I’m one of the youngest amongst my neighbours and this has meant that we have ambulance and fire here almost weekly. Erich went through the whole 65 thing a couple of years ago too, so all this should have helped me get accustomed. Somewhat. Like anything that you know is going to happen, when it happens is always a little different.

New Year’s Resolutions

I’ve never been big on New Year’s resolutions, regarding it more of an extroverted type of activity.  Personal declarations, pronouncements and announcements have always felt discordant with my personality type. There are enough social rules to abide without throwing in another of my own. New Year resolutions also have a hauntedness about things we should be doing but aren’t which lends them a sense of guilt, shoulds, musts, have tos, and yes, the superego. Who needs more superego?  Psychopaths could use more perhaps but I don’t cross their paths often.

The Word for this Year

Yearly, a dear friend in Kitchener hosts a wonder-filled party on Winter Solstice where she coaxes guests into a ritual whereby, we choose a word for the next year, and hang it on a tree in her front yard. Your year’s word should express what you want to attract towards you and what you want to transmit over the year ahead. A theme, guidepost, reference, mantra. It might be a word like bravery, forgiveness, joy, freedom, love or perseverance. I don’t want to mention too many examples – the power of suggestion might be too tempting. My word for example, in 2013 was magic and what a magical year it turned out to be! We moved back to Victoria that year which represented a huge change in our lives on every level. It was magical indeed. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been pulling cards to help clients identify their 2019 word which has been a lot of fun.

Sentiment

My word for 2019 is Sentiment. I’ve always described myself as someone who isn’t oriented to the past but lately however, I’ve noticed a softening regard towards things past. My long-term memory is getting sharper (yes, that’s really a thing that happens) which can be discombobulating and thrilling at the same time. I love these old memories returning with such clarity, colour, and sound. All those old familiar faces I haven’t seen for years – so many long passed to spirit.

I’m envisioning 2019 as a year of not acquiring anything new and not starting any new hobbies, but rather appreciating what I already have and exploring it all in a deeper way. One thing that’s for sure, a trip back to Ontario is in the plans. We’ve been living in Victoria for 5 years and I’m feeling such a hunkering for the Kitchener Market and of course many dear, familiar faces! Our tentative plan is for mid-late April, possibly the early part of May.

I wish you a memorable 2019 whatever that means to you.

I hope the problems that were plaguing you throughout 2018 are remedied not so far into 2019.

See the funny side in everything. Particularly yourself.

Believe me it’s there.

I wish you riches in all your favourite things in 2019.

December really is the month for nostalgia, isn’t it?  Not that I seem to need much nudging in that direction these days.  It’s so true that aging brings with it, a reminiscing mind that can and often does, gallop out of control down the paths of old memories that hold such promise of sensual pleasure at this time of year. The visuals of lights, ornamentation and all the shiny things; the sounds of singing choirs, bands playing old familiar tunes, bells ringing and laughter; food, drink, games and gift giving twig memories of holidays gone past.  It’s a heady mix of sentimentality, longing and sensual overload.

Even if you opt out of most things Christmassy, you’ll still be inundated with the collective energies that are constellated at year’s end.

The Strain Drives Many to Be Neglectful & Cruel

For many, Christmas/New Years is so stressful, that that feeling tends to blot out any competing others, such as, joy, charity and renewal.  The strain of the financial and social-pretense pressures drives many to be neglectful and sometimes even cruel to their bodies, families, friends and neighbours.

The holiday season is a great time to practice all those stress reducing intentions we know we should do but always seem to ignore at that moment we need them most!  If nothing else, build in quality alone time to do simple, normal things with people you want to do it with.  Get plenty of rest and eat lots of green vegetables. If you are alone and don’t want to be, consider volunteering at a Christmas dinner that’s being sponsored by a non-profit agency. This is a great way to share the season with others, be rewarded in the spirit of giving and feel connected to something larger than yourself.

We’ll experience Winter Solstice on December 22nd, which in the northern hemisphere translates to the shortest day of the year.  In the Tarot, the Winter Solstice is represented by the Sun card which depicts the birth of the twin gods of the solar cycle.  The Sun is born from the dark womb of the darkest night in the year, and on that day the hours of sunlight begin to lengthen and the power and strength of the sun begins its rebirth. It's the month for Sagittarius who love adventure, learning, hard work and being a part of something much bigger than themselves.

The Perfect Night for Moon Gazing!

Adding to all the excitement, December will reveal a full moon on the same night as Solstice, making this the perfect night for moon gazing!  The last full moon in a year is the perfect time to finish up what’s incomplete in our lives – purge, donate, gift, cleanse and maybe even fast.  These are the kind of rituals that effectively and spiritually express the deeper meanings associated with this day.  To ramp the energy, invite others of like-mind to join you!

Rich with Tradition, Ritual, Indulgence & Connection

People do unusual things in December.  Connect with friends they haven't spoken to all year; buy odd stuff; take holidays and celebrate years’ end.  It's a joyful, painful, exhilarating, depressing and spiritual time for billions around the world.

I'm always excited about December as I’m flooded with glorious memories of my childhood Christmases.  My mother worked tirelessly to create Christmas’s that were rich with tradition, ritual, indulgence and connection.  She had grown up deprived of all those luxuries which had left her determined she would change that for her own family.  We baked and sang and wrapped and ate until we were just filled to the brim.

I wish you a peaceful and joyful holiday season! Be safe, healthy and mindful.

Blessings Kathleen

Quote for Year's End from Cora

"First and foremost you are required to have faith.  Of myself I do not laugh at this word;  being a philosopher I can afford to accept it as a factor in the universe of spiritual cause and effect; and when it was said that Jesus could not perform many miracles in his native place because of their unbelief or lack of faith, I understand what it meant.  It means this: that the faith which was necessary, is the step that you must take to RECEIVE the fact, not to PRODUCE it."

November is my birthday month. I’ve discovered since crossing the 60’s threshold that my likes and dislikes have increasingly simplified.  I’m grateful to still find myself here and reasonably healthy for another year.  One of the many aging adages declares that we return to a childlike state as we move into our elder years. This is an unfoldment I witness daily in myself that delights and catches me by surprise.

I appreciate all the little things that happen in a day.  From those that spark a laugh and inspire gratitude in my heart to those things that remind me I am aging and must approach this stage in my life differently than I have the others.  More time must be carved for walks, cycling, sewing, cooking, preparing, pondering.  That’s what aging demands of us.

Respectable Elder/Crone

My health has been a primary focus for me over the past few months and perhaps that also is to be expected as we approach a birthday.  Although we say a number isn’t important, in a sense that’s not quite true.  We all bring some expectations re that number we are turning at a birthday, even if we hotly deny its relevance.  To varying degrees that number impacts on how we see ourselves positioned in time and place. AKA “ego”.

For one thing, people react to us differently.  You know your clock has hit some sort of milestone just by how people treat you.  Not people who have known you for a while but strangers. People who have known you for a while don’t alter their reactions to you unless something happens to make your age stand out to them such as a life threatening illness.

I recall the first time someone called me “ma’am”. I was 22 years old and he might have been 17 or 18.  I was blindsided and probably stared at him with my mouth hanging open.  He basically was suggesting that he saw me as the “elder” and was being respectful.  I didn’t notice any such thing – I just regarded him as the same as me UNTIL that “ma’am” emitted from his mouth.  Now I’m asked if I qualify for the senior discount. People have a way of putting you in your place – age wise, sex wise – in every way.

You don’t have to cave into it entirely but being aware will help you use this information for your own benefit.  Yes. Believe it or not, there are benefits to joining the ranks of the aged.  Expectations drop significantly allowing lots of room to challenge stereo types and have a good belly laugh especially on yourself.

Health Wake-Up Call

Just today we picked up our coffee from a shop counter and I forgot my gloves at the counter in a bit of muddle putting my wallet away in a new purse.  A fellow grabbed Erich’s arm and asked, “Are these yours (referring to my gloves)?” Erich answered, “Probably” and that started some giggling and I joked that’s just his optimism talking and they all guffawed.  The funny part was it was MY gloves not his and he was willing take full responsibility for forgetting ANY gloves because he knows his memory is totally pathetic whereas mine is still reasonably keen thank heavens.  But I am forgetting more and it’s an awkward adjustment for me.

I did need a wake-up call re my health. I needed to revamp my diet and exercise routine to be more in sync with my age and lifestyle.  What suited me a decade or two ago is markedly different than where I’m at today.  A visit from my “step-mother” Shirley, who passed away in 2013 helped me tremendously. I finally listened to her murmurings more keenly which led me down a road of exploration that led me to some shifts in my diet that were long overdue.  This has resulted in some amazing changes to my health. Listen to spirit.  See? We all need reminders, even me.

It never hurts to do an in depth examination and assessment re what in your life needs to be revised, tossed or embraced.  I like birthdays for this type of psychological nudging.

Scorpio & the High Priestess

Scorpio is the astrological sign for November and the Tarot card is the High Priestess.  The High Priestess’s element is water and like Scorpio she is the mystic, dream interpreter, card reader, wise woman of the Tarot.  She reminds us that we came from spirit and is to spirit we will return.  We listen to her guidance or she will knock us down with depression, neurosis, self harm, materialism or any number of maladies which emerge when we fail to consider/weigh/prioritize our spiritual health in all our decisions.

The High Priestess is our spiritual mother.  Her words can be severe, painful on the ears and heart, insensitive yet simultaneously freeing. She points the way to freedom but reminds us the cost isn’t cheap. November does seem fitting for the High Priestess – it’s the luminous, transitional month no matter where in the world you live.  I wish you a glorious spiritual month!  Pay special attention to the High Priestess in your psyche/soul – what is HER message to you this month? Try hard to hear her message above the racket and follow her guidance.  It will serve you well as you prepare for December which is always a crazy month in the west.

"You did a tarot reading for me earlier this year at Ingrid Hamilton’s tea. I’m just letting you know that you really nailed it!

You told me I’d have to make a sacrifice, detach myself from something in the past – to move on to something really good. Which might seem to sour, but then I’d move on to something so spectacular it would be like winning the lottery.

I found out about a better job which is a place I’ve always really admired. And got another car.

And so in one week – I got a new car and started a new job. If I’d won the lottery, I couldn’t have been any happier.

You totally rock!!!!!”

Studying the Tarot is like taking a symbology/esoteric/psychology course.  The Tarot (a word that doesn’t exist in any language other than as this deck of cards), is a depiction of our journey as spirit into physical form. The stages/learning at each step in this development and what it means when we successfully reach the end of a cycle are represented with a card.

When I used to teach the Tarot, I was amazed by the changes I witnessed in the lives of the students as they learned the meanings and how to read them.  Marriages and other significant relationships were split and forged; career paths were quit and launched.   Students’ appearances even changed!

Enlightenment or psychological growth (whatever lingo is your jam) does impact on us in a multitude of ways.  Self-love and acceptance relaxes our muscles especially those in the face, and all the joints in our bodies.  The resting expression on our faces will alter – we smile, laugh and cry more easily making us look younger.  As the joints in our bodies relax, we walk and move differently. Sometimes our appearance can alter so profoundly, someone we haven’t seen for a while might not even recognize us.

Secrets Revealed in the Tarot

All aspects of our journey and experience is comprised of good and bad. For example, the Devil card, which would be assumed to signal bad news, teaches us that sensuality without love becomes usury, addiction and entrapment. Cups, which are embraced as positive cards, reveal that ungrounded intuition and emotional instability can lead to paranoia and vain imaginings.

Our masculine and feminine aspects must be in balance. For example, the leadership qualities revealed in the Emperor must be balanced with the empathy and nurturance of the Empress.

Our life journey continually moves us towards wholeness. Our process of learning and growing throughout embodiment leads to an acceptance of ourselves, our limitations and gifts. This is encapsulated in the World card and a study of the four essential elements represented in the four suits. For example, when one of the elements is over-represented in a reading, we are guided to re-balance by bringing more of its opposite into our lives.

The human experience is an expression of spirit in matter. When our spirit enters matter, there will be irresistible temptations from both the unseen and seen worlds. The High Priestess represents insight, spiritual riches and knowledge. Following her call may lure us away from our bodies, however, and our day to day concerns for survival. Slavishly following the signals of the High Priestess may distract us from the needs of their bodies to eat and express sexual passion (eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa exemplifies this pathology). The Empress is the riches of the Goddess made manifest. She beckons us with promises of a generous harvest, physical pleasure, and the blessings of birthing. Too much Empress energy may lead to too much mothering and idealized materialism.

Our journey to wholeness will mean sacrifice and death, as revealed through the Hanged One and the Death cards. We must learn to relinquish our ego’s mythology of total control to discover the riches of self-actualization. True psychological health is reflected in our ability to sacrifice our egotistic needs to be recognized and admired at the alter of what supports the greater good and truth.

Balance is the key to emotional/spiritual maturity. Awareness of our spiritual power must lead to prudence, responsibility and beneficence or we will reap the ultimate backlash from the unseen world of sickness, despair and alienation.

Pride always comes before the fall. The Major Arcana offers this lesson several times along the Fool’s journey.  The Devil reminds us to be mindful of the trappings of success and the danger of losing the freedom and joy truly only available from the spiritual plane.  The Tower finally rips down all vestiges of egotism and Judgment promises us atonement (at-one-ment) for our lapses into egotism and be awarded a grace of rebirth.

We are Spiritual Beings in a Physical Body

At the World card, we achieve wholeness.  We embrace true joy which is an awareness of our purpose in life.  We are balanced, spiritual beings in a physical body, here to do the work of the sacred.  Our trials, challenges and losses are regarded from a perspective of wisdom, acceptance and generosity.  We humbly acknowledge that it is only in this very moment that we can experience fulfillment, all else is illusion.

I wish you all an enlightening and fulfilling autumn! Set your intentions to make this a month of balance, right purpose and joy.

Blessings Kathleen

"You were right on the money. Not only that but you were on target for related timing issues as well which I am aware is quite difficult and unique to do. What’s always interesting is that even with a reading I had no idea where I was going or what would happen to get me there yet all of these things were simply looked after and happened as if by perfect design. So while we all would like to get answers and direction It’s enough to simply know by way of summation how things could wind up and then get on with living our lives.

Thank you so much Kathleen!  All the Best Eunice"

September is the birthday month for Virgo which is another reason why I love September so much.  All signs have their gifts and limitations but there’s something so irrepressibly adorable about those Virgos.  Characteristically sincere, anxious to please, and loyal, I’ve yet to meet a Virgo I didn’t like.  They can be critical, picky and verbose but rarely are they dishonest, narcissistic, manipulative or mean spirited.  Their gifts far outweigh their flaws.

If you have a Virgo friend or lover, consider yourself one of the chosen.  They dole out their love sparingly and likely you don’t even know they love you but you can be sure if they’re hanging with you, they love you because they’re just happy most of the time to be by themselves.  Virgo of course, is the sign of the Virgin but in this case it’s not about sexual virginity but in a wholeness unto themselves way as Marion Woodman (Jungian, Toronto-based psychotherapist who died this year) describes.

Virgos Like to Chat

Virgo sits in my mid-heaven on my astrological chart which helps to balance and ground my Scorpio sun. It’s helpful in some respects when it comes to work for example, but on the negative side, it further hampers my ability to express those deeper emotions roiling around in my Scorpio soul.

Because Virgos struggle to express their feelings, they regard others who can find just the right words to express feeling, particularly those deeper and complex ones, with amazement and a kind of worship.  Virgos like to chat and will talk your head off given half a chance but it’s more about what they are thinking, evaluating or planning than what they love or excites them which can make them sometimes, a tad boring.

Practicality, attention to detail, and organizational skill is the Virgo’s home space but in the realm of intimacy they have a devil of a time.

Virgos are sensitive and this at times will trigger anxiety, hypervigilance and skittishness.  This anxiety will mean they need to be alone for a while and if you insist on hanging with them through this period, they will get argumentative and snarly.  Don’t think you can make them feel better, unless they ask, in which case, go all in.  When a Virgo befriends someone, who knows how to do this dance well, they sign on for life.

If you fall in love with a Virgo you’ll need to get used to a persistent and subtle suggestion of criticism.  Furthermore, their practicality will perennially threaten to stomp on any urges to silly and spontaneous fun, or outbursts of emotional effusiveness. Don’t expect too many (any?) declarations of undying love. Likely your intuition will be honed to perfection after a time. This isn’t because they don’t love you, it’s just that they don’t trust their feelings to be true or prevailing.  Virgos trust their intellect and practicality far more.  If you can be grateful and appreciative of the special gifts offered by the Virgo, you’ll have a life-long, stimulating relationship. If they suspect usury or vanity, you’re finished and they won’t likely give you a second chance.

The Hermit Card in the Tarot

The Hermit card is the middle earth element in the Tarot’s majors, corresponding nicely with Virgo.  The Hermit stands for walking your own path with a determined, tough exterior and hidden, deeply emotional and spiritual soft inner core.

The Hermit chooses to be alone on this path.  They have an idea or inspiration in their soul that they must pursue, and they have no interest in explaining, describing, or justifying it to anyone, nor do they have any interest in enticing anyone to follow them down this path.  They aren’t taking this alone path to lead or follow – they just know it’s right for THEM.  The Hermit represents maturity, spiritual awareness and insight and individualism.

September is one of my favourite months.  Who isn’t super charged by September?  Cooling temperatures, migrations for everyone in the animal kingdom including humans for school and work and best of all, as we’re heading into the end of the month, glimpses of the spectacular colour changes just ahead.  I’ve been fortunate to live in university and college cities all my life, so that September moving, back-to-school energy is a welcome and familiar yearly ritual to me.  I can see and feel all the preparations for the big migration ramping up by mid-August like a planting that will spring forth fruit within a matter of a few short weeks. All those young, curious, nervous, smart people wandering along the streets full of excitement and anticipation.  The older I get, the more I love it.

In any event, I wanted to thank you for your warm and insightful reading. While I enjoyed the entire reading, I feel that I derived the most value in my *aha* moment of realizing what I must do next. I want to do a good job!!!

August is my anniversary for publishing this ezine. This month marks 15 years since I sent out my first newsletter.  Originally they were simple, short emails sent out to a few students and clients who had come to see me in person and given me their email addresses to be kept abreast of my upcoming courses and events.

This is my 180th issue which is a little discombobulating to be honest.  How I've managed to keep up with the writing of this every month for 15 years, I'll never know.  I guess I just like writing my musings to anyone who might be interested.  If you aren't, there is a link at the bottom of the page where you can click to be removed from the list. I won't be offended.  Nowadays there are millions of these circulating the web.  When I started there weren't any as far as I knew. It was just a thing I thought I'd do that some people might find helpful.

The Month of Leo & the Sun Card in the Tarot

Leo’s element is fire and their symbol animal is Lion.

Taking pride in their tribe, Leos are the ones who beat their chests, exclaiming to all who would listen (and most do), “I am a member of THIS tribe”, and everyone wishes they also were a member of THAT tribe.  They are the Ambassadors (think Barak Obama) of the zodiac.  Around the lunch table at work, they flourish photos of their loved ones and if they have children… brace yourself because it’s going to be a session.

Leos come in two distinct brands.  The gregarious, life of the party who loves to tell jokes, dance and sing.  Oddly, they never appear to change much no matter how much alcohol they consume. The other Leo is the shy Lion, quiet-spoken and seemingly self-effacing.  No matter what outer manifestation their personality exhibits, all Leos consider themselves number one. Sporting a mane of lush locks that you can’t help but notice, you find yourself vying for their smile.

I’ve never met a Leo who didn’t love music.  Putting on costumes and dancing around the campfire – probably a Leo.  They are enchanting! Everyone has a Leo friend or lover because Leos have so many friends and lovers.  But beware! They can be a tad high and mighty and belittling to those they consider beneath them. This means they can be fiercely competitive, envious and vain.  In a temper, they’re fearsome indeed. That’s when all the shouting, shattering and scattering starts.

The Dark Side of the Sun Tarot Card

The Tarot card for the fire of August is the Sun card.  It’s hard to imagine the dark side of the Sun.  It doesn’t appear to have one.  When the Sun is shining in the northern August sky, it’s glorious.  By August, the Sun has made significant strides towards the southern hemisphere, so its shine is a little softer, muted, and gentle.  But in the later afternoon it burns hot and bright.

The classic Sun card depicts a child or two, with arms and legs spread wide, naked, embracing the warmth and light of a brightly painted Sun which typically dominates the upper half of the card.  It means pleasure, positivity, enlightenment, joy, freedom in vulnerability, and carefree happiness.  What’s not to love about that?

As Jung would say, however, the brighter the light, the darker the shadow.  Someone who exhibits positivity all the time often suffers the darkest depression.  Alone.  In the warning position, the Sun means there are things lurking in the shadows that threaten your vulnerability and trust.  It’s watchful in the deep, darkest shadows and when it leaps out to pull you down under.  Beware!  The shock will be electrifying.  What’s hidden from the Sun doesn’t have access to its gift revelatory and purifying properties.  It’s dark, damp, mouldy and potentially deadly.

In the ancient, Egyptian faith, the God Ra or Sun God and was all-powerful.  The Egyptians believed that a person would be wise to pay heed to him! His shine warmed the ground and played a crucial role in crop success.  Ra was LIFE. But he was DEATH too. He would melt you to a puddle when he was shining bright and hot at midday in the desert.

August is a Month of Poignancy

When we turn our calendars to August, our first thought is, “Summer is approaching its end”.  One more month and we’re at fall equinox.  Sob. There’s a bite in the morning and evening air by mid-month.  The Sun arises later and sets earlier.  There’s an almost frenetic energy by the end of the month as everyone rushes to capture these last vestiges of summer whist preparing for all that September brings.

The word “august” means distinguished, elegant, illustrious, prestigious, renowned, and exalted.  As a month, it’s all those things.  A special month to be appreciated especially at the bounty it brings us in the form of harvest. I wish you a lovely one wherever in the world you are celebrating its gifts.

YouTube Video Channel Gets an Update

I've returned to uploading videos in the past few weeks which I'm pretty excited about. These videos will be in the form of a vlog whereby I discuss a reading; the cards I drew and how I interpreted the card in relationship to the clients' issue and question.  This is a way to scratch my teaching/lecturing itch.

You can visit my Youtube Channel HERE .  By subscribing to my channel and pressing the bell icon beside the subscribe button, you will receive an email notification that I've uploaded another video. I have one about to go live and another in the queue.  I hope to upload a new video at least once a week - maybe more if the editing piece doesn't swamp me!

June is represented by the Lovers card in the Tarot and it’s Gemini month in astrology.

The Lovers card means we are facing a complex either/or choice.  On the one hand the outcome looks predictable, on the other, the outcome is unclear and risky.  In terms of romantic lovers, it would point to having to choose between thrill and steady or affair and commitment.

Gemini as the sign of the twins, is a focus on soul mates, connection and communication.  It’s also suggestive of the duality within the Gemini:  The twins existing in one person. June is a solstice month when exactly ½ the day is light and ½ is night which is why Gemini is so well represented in June.  Darkness and light in an equal and balanced duality.

Psychic Readings and Morality

One of a reader’s most complex challenges is her/his own prejudices/assumptions/moral code.  It’s a slippery slope!  Most importantly, a reader needs to know what their limitations are - what’s negotiable for them and what isn’t.

A client with a married lover is a case in point.

I don’t suffer strict moral limitations on this issue. In my view and experience, some, maybe even most, people are simply not monogamous. My experience, which may be skewed admittedly, would suggest most people can DO monogamy as a sacrifice to have the other goodies they like in a committed, long-term relationship but given their druthers, they would take new lovers whenever they wished.

It’s a promise made at a time, under a set of circumstances that may shift when a life change takes place, such as the birth of a child.  The commitment to remain together for monetary or child-rearing reasons, along with the transformed decision to open the relationship to new partners may happen at any time in a relationship’s journey.  For both sexes.  I’m not one that subscribes to the notion that women are, by some freak of nature, more monogamous than men.  The fact that this is typically more evident is simply social conditioning at play.

Online dating

This works for some but in my experience, a minority succeed in finding their true love online.  Foremost, you must go at it with the right mind-set.  It’s a mine field! Lying on profiles, having a steady girlfriend or being married and the partner living elsewhere, photos that are decades out of date, height, weight, job and hairline exaggerations.  Online dating is like running across a fast-moving river and trying not to sink.  You must take it all LIGHTLY - moving on from next to next lightning fast.  Don’t take any of it personally or seriously and be realistic in your approach – too good to be true? Do you think he’s/she’s gorgeous, smart, successful, kind, generous, funny and single?  Needing to meet their true love online because they can’t find anyone that will put up with them in person?  Seriously?

Love Takes Years

I’m often asked if their lover loves them.  True LOVE takes years to emerge, evolve and grow deep roots.  Love at first sight is LUST at first sight.  No one truly loves you until they’ve experienced you in all your disgusting glory – sick, vulnerable, making mistakes, stupid and otherwise. When we commit to being with one person for a lifetime, it’s their faults that will become our teachers and their gifts our enlightenment.

Making a commitment to this one person is the single biggest mistake you don’t want to make.  It will be a far greater investment than anything you might buy.  I’ve known people to spend more time humming and hawing over a car purchase than declaring a life time commitment to someone.  Your committed relationship will affect your health (for the good or bad), longevity (yes, married women die younger than single women and married men live longer than single men), financial stability (or not), career trajectory (self-confidence, workaholism), childbearing and rearing, and family relationships. It’s HUGE.

Now you know why it’s so easy to fall in love in June. Be intuitive and wise, circumspect and spontaneous – find that balance in the dark and light as you navigate this wondrous and treacherous journey ahead.

When Taurus folk are in fine form, they are calm, practical, and hard working …and, unfairly I believe, often described as stubborn (“bullish”).  I tell my Taurus friends that when they are being accused of being stubborn, it is because their accuser is not in agreement. Taurus’ may appear to have a sudden change of heart. Then what can be even more surprising to their relations, is their unrelenting determination that is now uncharacteristically prepared to do battle.

Taurus’ do tend to get an idea lodged in their brains which they are reluctant to release.  Often quite easy going however, don’t let that fool you.  A Taurus is inclined to going with the flow while internally remaining uncommitted to the direction until the moment to commit hits. Looking at you with surprise, they’ll say, “Oh no. That’s not for ME.”   They can be reserved about their feelings but don’t let that knock you off kilter either.  They love deeply, value loyalty above all else and are dedicated to what they truly believe in.  To the death.

I always jokingly say that Taurus’s love pretty things and in fact they tend to be rather lovely themselves!

Characteristically sturdy and resilient with steady nerves. They demonstrate their love by gifting generously.   I think of Taurus’s as the salt of the earth sort of folks.  Steady and honourable goes the course. They don’t like to argue but they can be vulnerable to anxiety which may be linked to frustration so when they blow, head for the hills because that volcano that only erupts every 500 years is about to explode.  Get out of the way!

The Empress as Maiden, Mother, Crone

May is heralded by the Empress in the Tarot. She’s out in all her finery!  She represents the sacred triangle of Maiden, Mother and Crone.  She is the Goddess embodied in the earth.  She symbolizes the forces in nature related to receiving, fertility and chaos.  A volcano sits quietly for eons until suddenly, randomly, inexplicably, it erupts in a fire-spewing frenzy destroying everything in its path, like what is happening in Hawaii right now.

A little breeze in the Arabian desert picks up small particles of sand that will waft across the Atlantic until its force builds until it becomes a fierce hurricane wind whipping up millions of gallons of water and decimating everything in its path. This process starts in May and harvests on the east coast at the end of August and into September.

Generous, nurturing, loving, confident, and luscious; The Empress is Aphrodite the Maiden in her beauty and sex appeal; Hera the Mother, fiercely protective, proud and bodacious.  Finally, the apex of the Sacred Feminine Triangle, the ancient Crone as in the Goddess Hekate.  The Crone as wise grandmother who prepares a brew of hearty soup, all the while singing metaphoric songs of guidance.

The Empress as May in the northern hemisphere offers fragrant plants, flowers and newborns. Unpredictability in weather, wild winds as changing temperatures shift around the planet and of course those glorious, sunny fresh days to remind you why living on earth is just the best place to be in the universe.

Taurus Can Be Hard Ground

The ground in May, like the earth element of Taurus is solid and can be a tough nut to crack.  You wonder if your plants are going to root and grow.  You wonder why the ground is resistant to your watering.  You watch anxiously over your garden to see if it’s going to do anything! That’s why there are so many festivals cross culturally dedicated to coaxing and celebrating the spring planting. May is key to human survival.  It’s in our DNA to be excited and yet nervous about May.

We might not all be in planting mode, but likely we’re planning/planting for the best summer ever!  Do you imagine the bounty of the BBQ?  Having fun in the sun with family and friends?  Family reunions? Weddings, picnics, births, outside activities?  All of this hearkens back to the time when we were planting the seeds that we would revel in watching grow all summer long and hope to harvest aplenty in late August, September and October.

I wish you a wondrous May!  Be mindful of the seeds you plant this month – they will continue to grow all summer long bringing that much awaited harvest four months from now.

Blessings Kathleen

Quote
"The ancient lunar calendar, which measured time by the thirteen moons in a solar cycle (rather than the twelve solar months in our year) was associated with Goddess-centred religions that honoured the moon and, by extension,  with women and women's culture and creativity. The unlucky connotation of the number thirteen arose through suspicious fear of the changeable moon and of the creativity of women in later patriarchal times. The moon after all, was associated with mortality and with the fear that arose from facing death."

“….you have no idea how accurate you were on some things….”

Kathleen, thank you so much for this afternoon!

My mom has been to many psychics in her life but she said that you were the first one that she truly felt comfortable with. You have no idea how accurate you were on some things with both of us! She has already been raving about you to all of her friends so I wouldn’t be surprised if a few call you.

Thanks again and hope to be in touch in the future

I hope you had a lovely, Spring-like Easter weekend.  I did! The best.  My highlight was attending a social sewing gathering at my local fabric shop in downtown Victoria on Sunday morning which always brings me that special boost of maker’s joy. An event I look forward to every month.  We sit in a small circle in the centre of the shop and rather abashedly share our makes over the past month.  We talk about what’s new in patterns, fabric and online that the rest of the group might enjoy.  It’s my “circle of women” who know me only as a rather geeky but eager-to-learn, advanced beginner sewist (yes, this really is a designation).

I think it’s good for our character to position ourselves in places and situations where we’re the new, green kid.  As we age, we can be guilty of gravitating to what we know, falling into habits and routines that are familiar and comfortable. For an aging brain that tends to repeat, obsess and forget, experimenting and learning new skills with new folks, challenges us to be vulnerable and adapt.  Sewing has done wonders for my aging brain (I wrote a blog post about it which you can read HERE)

Aries is the God of War

The first three weeks of April is the time of Aries.  In the Tarot, this is the season of the Emperor.  The boss, the father and alpha patriarch, he rules by divine will.  He represents virility, leadership, masculine force, fertility and fire.  The King of Kings. The archetypal Yang.  Never a dull moment.

“God!  It’s hard to be humble”, yells the Emperor.  As Aries, He is the God of War.  A word of advice, don’t fight with an Aries. He likes it too much and you will inevitably not like it much at all.

A client (Leo) recently came for a reading in deep distress. She was failing miserably to cope with her ex-husband whom she had divorced years earlier.  He had declared war on her, assigning all the big guns of the court system to crush her.  Having his way, there would be nothing left of her once all his armaments had been fired.  He had already brought her to her knees financially and had her jailed on trumped up, unproven charges. Don’t go to war with an Aries man particularly if you suspect that he’s suffering (or more accurately others around him are!) from a narcissistic personality disorder.

The Horned God in Celtic Tradition

In Celtic faith, he is the Horned God chasing the maiden Goddess through the fields in early Spring. He will capture and impregnate her, symbolizing the stirring of the ground to give forth the bounty that will feed the tribe through the winter.  He is strength, seed and direction.  A good Emperor must see beyond his own needs and desires to sustain the burden of responsibility for the tribe.  He is stoicism, wisdom and judgement.  He is the Spring and the Return of the Sun (Son) which is why his element is fire.

In feminist ideology the Emperor is another card which carries complications.  Why must leaders be men?  Why is he the connected to the life-giving force, warmth and light of the Sun? Feminist decks have supplanted him with the Crone, the Witch and Medicine Woman.  His relationship to patriarchy, misogyny, and harsh judgement has been the bane of women’s existence for thousands of years.

Women have suffered untold centuries of prejudice, torture and murder at his hands as his grab for power has often been at their expense.  Don’t get me started. It will take me hours to climb off this soapbox.

The Nordic Goddess Ester

In April, the ancient Celtic and Nordic practice stays with us in the celebration of Easter which is sourced from the Goddess Ester. This Nordic Goddess represented fertility (Easter Eggs) and the fecundity of the earth to provide sustenance.
Celebrate April!  Buy some fresh flowers for your home and garden, take extra deep breaths of that lovely fresh, spring air and the earth stirring to life.  Be present and re-energize.

"Everything that Kathleen told me in my tarot reading has come to pass. She is very accurate. In one of my readings Kathleen said: ‘don’t sign any legal documents tomorrow’. Thanks to Kathleen I was able to avoid making a big mistake. She is one of the “real gifted” psychics! As well as being very well read and up to date in her field. In fact, she’s probably adding to that body of knowledge as we speak.”

Spring! Crocuses are poking up, cherry blossoms are blooming, the earth smells rich with promise and best of all, the SUN is returning to us here in the north!  We see it earlier in the morning and she sticks around a little later into the evening. Spring makes you feel like moving your body. You have a Spring in your step.  Springing into action.   Springing to life.  The older I get, the more I notice this phenomenon.

In the Tarot, Spring is the season of the Fool.  The Fool is 0, all potential. The Fool, the symbol of beginnings, represents our first step into embodiment.  Each new venture we embark upon in our lives puts us back in the Fool’s space.  Take a risk.  Do something you’ve never tried before.  Go forth, explore, learn, grow, take risks, fall off a cliff.

The Fool is typically depicted as a character walking with their head lifted, eyes focused on the horizon and skyward.  Little attention being paid to the ground.  No notice of the little dog that jumps on her hind leg, warning her of the potential dangers ahead.  Onward and upward.  A spring in her step, a look of happy anticipation on her face.  You know, that la de da look.  Open with trust and faith that this is going to be a wondrous adventure.

Fulfilling Your Life’s Purpose

When the Fool card shows up in a reading, it signals that you need to have the confidence to take a risk to pursue your heart’s desire.  You are being pulled to fulfill your soul’s purpose.  You are discovering who YOU are, what YOU want and what YOU can do. It means you must and will have the energy to make choices, stand your ground and believe in yourself.

When the Fool is issued as a warning, it describes a situation where all this wonderful “spring” energy is stuck.  The Fool impetus is not being given license to express itself fully.  You are at risk of making a “foolish” choice.  Taking no action would be just as detrimental.

In a Negative Placement The Fool Indicates Pathological Dependencies

Making wrong choices, refusing to commit to any course of action, paranoid and pessimistic, lacking self-confidence, following a path of least resistance instead of seizing control of your life and destiny threaten to derail the recipient of this Fool’s warning.  Further, this blocked Fool may be refusing to grow up and accept responsibility. A Fool in this negative place is being wishy-washy, half-hearted, dependent and self-defeating. It means you are settling for this stuck place and refusing to listen to sage advice.  You are being cowardly which is derailing you from your path of true destiny.

When we block this energy to venture forth with trust and a sense of adventure. we are wasting our lush human potential through lack of initiative and courage.

On a positive note it might just be the message the Fool needs to hear right now to be spurred into acting!  We may know well that we’re stuck but we’re still afraid to take that leap of faith. Hearing this in a reading is often the nudge we need at just the right time.

Spring sets off a flurry of exciting plans for travel, visiting, adventure, activities and relationships.  It’s a time to fall in love.  Be in Paris.

Spring Equinox will arrive at 9:15 AM on Tuesday March 20th for us on the west coast.  This is when the sun is at the equator (Equinox) right in the middle between the northern and southern hemispheres.  There was a time when humanity celebrated this time with festivals and community events.  The Equinox marked the time of planting, a return of warmth, light and an ease of living.

Regrettably, much of this has been culturally lost, though vestiges of its significance is carried in most of the world’s major religions.  This article outlines 10 of them around the world.

I wish you a Joyful Spring!  Rich with promise.
